Re: Homo-bi chat / advice thread
Well at £400 they could be a stop gap until some more £1k a6's appear.
Providing postage isn't death by snoo snoo, I've agreed to buy em (at £375 + p&p). The dealer missed £1500 today. The a6 was crystal clear. The only problem is, I really need walnut or piano black

Ha ha I love the way certain colloquialisms get altered through mishearing or whatever. Someone described them as "draw dropping". Unless that's the way his wife reacted when he bought them. In which case I'm having them and inviting all the local ladies over to listen to their favourite CDs!!! Two at a time naturally.

I'm quite sold on this high res music. Currently downloading some 192KHz/24bit Van Halen.

Can you hear any difference?SuperPang wrote:I'm quite sold on this high res music. Currently downloading some 192KHz/24bit Van Halen.
I'm starting to get really peeved with this "audiophile" malarky. There's so much misinformation that its hard to tell what's real.
From what I can see, cables are a nonsense. You wont hear a difference with anything "better" than14awg copper wire.
http://www.avforums.com/forums/intercon ... gures.html"
Vinyl has a lower dynamic range than CD (and in turn HD files) but they compress the **** out of masters and remasters now, so it's all lost. Apparently you can't do this with vinyl as it would jump, buy you don't have the same range to begin with. This site seems pretty good for info:
http://www.dr.loudness-war.info"
I'll be using 14awg van damme cable and 16awg for my surrounds. I don't think it will be any better than any other copper wire, but at least it should give the right resistance.

Re: Homo-bi chat / advice thread
The VH set is a mixed bag (as high res music music is in general). Wasn't overly impressed with the first album but VH2 sounds great which is nice because it's their best album IMO. There are nerdy websites like this that examine the technical detail. (He's so right about Spanish Fly.)markedkiller78 wrote: Can you hear any difference?
High res music should be viewed as the best digital remaster you can buy, if you've got the equipment to do it justice. I've bought some stuff that doesn't really sound any different to the CD and some that sounds much better. I say remaster as unfortunately it's only older mainstream music that seems to get the HD treatment. New releases at these sort of bitrates would sound incredible but unfortunately the average punter is happy with iTunes quality so all you get is the classical and obscure stuff.

Re: Homo-bi chat / advice thread
So the DR on spanish fly is about 20, nice
From that thread it looks like the CD from the 80s had a DR of 15+ and the remaster 8
wtf are record companies playing at.

Re: Homo-bi chat / advice thread
The theoretical DR of a
LP 40db (now 30db due to usage)
CD 98db
HD audio 144db (24 bit)
Humans should be able to discern 0-140db, so in theory HD audio is worthwhile. However.....
Rock concert 100db
So you will generally never play music that loud. Therefore, the theoretical limit of a CD is perfect.
In real terms, the masters I'm complaining about are 5-10! They essentially make all the quiet bits loud and there is no variance. You can't do this with vinyl as the needle would jump, so records can't be as tightly compressed (DR)
Pretty much all music from 1994 onwards may have DR compression. It's one those things were one person did it, their music was louder when played at the same volume (louder is of course better) so they all followed suit.
I think hd audio is worthwhile for multi channel use, you obviously get more detail to each channel, but for stereo it's pointless, caveat here, unless as is often the case, its the best master available. It's a pity this could have been done on a CD, but hey ho.

Re: Homo-bi chat / advice thread
It's all too complicated
the DR is a factor, between 1-20,
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range#section_2"
Vinyl always seems to be converted / ripped to 24 bit, but its a different comparison.
I would like to hear something like Spanish fly with its 20 DR rating on a nice system to see what I'm missing but, as you know my DAC can't handle anything higher than 96. Now I've read up on it, I don't think I want it (or rather to pay more for it)
Maybe I should just listen to music and forget all this ****
