make sure to post a thread about the project.....im very interested in seeing the process of converting it
Ooooooooo, Outrun 2.... How I WISH! That is a far more ambitious project that you have in mind.
how so...you make me nervous now :? ....my biggest concern was the cost.....is chihiro hardware very different than other driving hardware or is it some other issue you are referring to?

i know next to nothing about driving cabs, but i have developed a pretty serious outrun 2 addiction.....so i figured it would be cheaper to find a used driving cab locally, get the outrun 2 hardware and whatnot from the 'geez-meister and do the conversion myself rather than getting ruined importing a full cab.....would be a fun project.....but as you said there would be a LOT for me to learn on the fly....but thats half the fun for me

out of curiousity, for your project how much do you think its gonna add up to in the end....rough estimate?

and what kind of driving cab is that...its quite nice....and how much was it?

i sourced the north american outrun2sp cab locally but its butt-ugly....looks like a kiddie ride......and they want $5k  ....im hoping to do it for MUCH less.....am i dreaming?
Quite a few queries. I've owned 3 driving cabs now and they have progressively cost me more and more as I jump from one system to the next. Previously I owned a European twin Ridge Racer cabinet, which was an old System 22 motherboard. Frankly, it was fantastic and Rave Racer just made it all the better! It took up far too much room however and it left me with little scope of purchasing any other cabinets so I sold it to another member.

I almost got my hands on Ridge Racer V, but it fell through when the seller of the Namco System 246 motherboard and disc lost contact with me due to the Killer Cabs site disappearing. I was also in the process of purchasing a twin version of the cabinet I now have.

It was a Sega Touring Cars cabinet. It is very common and has been used on a number of different setups. JNC sell them for roughly £250+ partially equipped, when they have them in stock (i.e. they will not have any arcade motherboards, games titles and may require some work / parts to get them working with the set up you decide upon).

I roughly estimated the full cabinet, once complete, somewhere in the region of £700.00 baring in mind what Andy Geezer has confirmed to me in that the Sega Touring cab does NOT come equipped with force feedback installed or the Initial D card reader. I decided for the lower cost, I could live with not having either. That said, on the whole this hasn't actually cost me anything as I sold a pile of hardware via eBay and various threads and actually purchased bits and pieces a month at a time. Never actually touched my bank account, which is the deal I have with my wife. So long as my hobby doesn't venture into the bank account and I pay for it through doing deals, buying and selling etc, then ok!

In relation to my comments on your pending unit, it was the use of hardware that had me interested as frankly the cost of the motherboard alone would be roughly the cost of my entire cabinet!

ya....im expecting somewhere in the vicinity of $1k for the mobo and game software......its a lot....but i REALLY like outrun 2 :D ....and its not a lot of money if you consider the countless hours of enjoyment

and tbh $1k is a lot easier to scrape together over a few months than $5k for a new outrun2sp north american monstrosity.....it could be made nice with some modding....but i am not forking out $5k for something i need to fix to make nice

as for the cab,i want something along the lines of what you have there.....and the price sounds about right...

hmmmm....this is encouraging..... :D

Outrun is one of my favorite series as well. The first time I ever saw it was way back in the era of 8bit computers and I had it for the Amstrad CPC 464. The really funny thing about it, looking back was that you bought the game and got a cassette of the arcade music to play on a tape recorder as you played the game. I completed it dozens of times. Eventually I was somewhere in England and discovered the arcade cabinet and realized just how much better arcades were.

See for yourself: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MYGCti-t5co

I then moved up to the Atari ST: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=T7iLereeB ... re=related

Thus far the best I had of Outrun has been on the Xbox: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV3JWuWdva8

Would LOVE to have a shot of your arcade once it is complete, have a dig around with the Chihiro system, but alas you are in Canada! Images please once in progress!

As for the cabinet, I am sure they were available in the States - I always feel sorry for the American market when it comes to the Naomi as the Universal was so much cooler in Japan and Europe!

Wovou :o

If you can find something like a Initial D1,2,3 cab Jonny5 you can drop the chihiro straight in there. If you are not fussed with ID, then you could sell on the hardware for a decent chunk of change. N2 Mobo, GD Drive, Dimm, ID GD rom. AFAIK the wiring, feedback, shifter etc will all work

It’ll be a lot cheaper than buying OR2 & easier than modding an M2/M3 cab with the added bonus of feedback, which makes a big difference for me.

I’ve got 2 ID3 singles & as much as I’d love OR2, the 2 mobos / Discs are going to run at £1600+ which I really can’t afford.

sweet...thanx for that info mark :D ....exactly what i wanted to know....this is going to be a very drawn out process......probably save up and get the mobo and software by the spring and then save a couple months and grab the cab...by then i should be in my new loft with the space to accomodate it....

dont think the g/f would appreciate a driving cab in our current 500sq. ft. 1 bedroom apt :?

although your suggestion now has me thinking about sourcing an Initial D cab through local distributors and see the cost...cuz if it wasnt too bad i could get that and trade/sell the ID software and the naomi setup towards outrun2 8-) ......hmmmmmmmmmmm

If you end up with the ID2 or ID3 cabinet and software GDrom and want to sell them separately, then please get in contact via PM. I'd be interested.

MVS Carts:
Puzzle Bobble
Puzzle De Pon

MVS Motherboards - five one slots, all working nicely. Total of 4 different models. I have two of the one with the joystick ports and headphone out etc which is nice, and a few very small ones.

PCBs:
R-TYPE (think it might be a bootleg)
SF2 Champion Edition (defo a bootleg)
Snow Bros (legit)
Turbo Force
Final Star Force

All for £200!

Landed on my feet there I think.

Despite this, I've actually spent most of this week playing the knock-off Sengoku3 cart that I picked up fo a tenner here from someone who doesn't like bootlegs! I only bought it on a whim as it was cheap - but man, what a game! Great fun - one of the best scrolling fighters I've ever played.

Later this month, I'm going to see the same retired arcade op who sold me this lot. He's put together another deal package for me which will apparently include (amongst others):

MVS 4 Slot, Xmen/Streetfighter, SF Alpha, Metal Slug, Pulstar, Blazing Star, Vampire Slayer (he says this is a Capcom fighter, so it must be either Vampire Saviour or Vampire Hunter - although aren't these the same game?!) all at similarly low prices (he only wants £20 for the 4 slot for instance!).

He even shows me everything working first! Sweet deal.

If he ever has any doubles of anything good come in, I'll pick them up and pass them on to the board at the price I paid. :)

Is Snow Bros in that pic? All the PCBs look too large.

It is there, yes - second down on the lefthand side. Upon closer inspection, I'm now convinced this is a knockoff - two of the chips are marked "SOON HWA SNOW 00" and "SOON HWA SNOW 01". That's disappointing! :(

It's the Final Star Force that is definately legit as it has the TECMO markings on the board.

Definitely a bootleg.

Real Snow Bros: http://pcbdb.net/?show:1479 - see how small it is compared to the edge connector? :)

Taking a guess, from this distance - the bottom left board is legit (Final Star Force?), as is the bottom centre (Turbo Force?). Bootleg SF2 top right, R-Type top centre.

Raiding an op = fantastic :)
