Thanks, abbreviations are a bit hard to get. Those look nice in 360° view option.

Been pondering that one for a while. 64gb sd is pretty cheap now.Pyongyang wrote:Fiio X5. Would you? Anyone?
What about the X3, it's a lot cheaper?
Think I'm going to pick up an acram rdac for my headphone amp, mainly out of boredom. They're pretty cheap used.

Re: Varnish connoisseurs
The X1 is out soon too. Looks cheeky and at a non life-threatening price too... unlike those Abbott & Costello mp3 players. Or whatever they are called... that cost about 900 trillion pesetas.

Re: Varnish connoisseurs
I would wait till Xmas when some people have had 1st hand impression of the pono player - it could become the next Zune
but seriously most of the features are not even implemented yet and are still to come. I would wait and see.

I should get my Pono next month. I've a feeIing it'll be pretty good for $400. It's a shame it doesn't have digital output though as my Sony ZX1 works beautifully with my Hugo.

Got a stack of old CEX vouchers to use. Saw an X5 today for a savage price. Vouchers would bring it down to about a nifty.
Tempted. Or wait for an X1? Not interested in the Toblerone presents Pono On The Cliff. Looks like a bag of poo-coated smunt nuggets.

Still listening and loving the AK120 with the B&W P7 combo!SuperPang wrote:I should get my Pono next month. I've a feeIing it'll be pretty good for $400. It's a shame it doesn't have digital output though as my Sony ZX1 works beautifully with my Hugo.

Latest listenings are Jimi Hendrix vinyl rips @ 24/96...although a well produced and mastered album sounds fantastic even at FLAC lossless.
Really interested in the Pono, more with how they are going to implement the HD ecosystem to the client from a diversity and quality standpoint as HD tracks have had some serious issues with some of their "so called" HD material, customers ending up having to rely on forums to get an idea if that particular album is worth the price of the download.

For gods sake, its a carton box - not the holy grail!

Re: Varnish connoisseurs
Yeah, I'm sure Pono Music have had a lot of customer feedback telling them how important it is to check the provenance of releases.
There needs to be an industry-wide change in approach to new releases. The best high-res stuff I've heard has been sample tracks from of new niche classical and acoustic releases that were recorded in 192 or higher and then left unmolested. Nobody has this approach for popular music as lossy portable music is still king. If a new chart release finds its way to HD Tracks you can guarantee it sounds exactly the same as the CD.

Re: Varnish connoisseurs
Couldn't agree more!! From that standpoint it's even more brave of Pono to release this onto the market at this stage as there would have to be a paradigm shift towards total support for HD from the Music Companies/Studios downwards.
I love analog but if were going to push foward with HD it's got to be supported by everybody otherwise it will stay as another niche market.

Re: Varnish connoisseurs
Headphone fans, Dr. Chesky's Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc is 20% off on HD Tracks right now. If you've got the equipment, it's well worth a purchase. As well as some stunning binaural sample tracks, there are a load of test tracks for imaging/height etc and some examples of dynamic range compression.

What's this yoke all about?

Anyone tried DSD?
Edit: Apparently the Pono won't be able to decode DSD files?

That Norah Jones album is probably available on wax cylinder as well. It's on every other bloody format.

Re: Varnish connoisseurs
Mr Robb Watts, who is the best DAC designer in the world [/clarkson] reckons DSD aint all that, as do others. Apparently DXD is the future
The only DSD I've heard is SACDs on my AV amp. I have a capable DAC but can't be arsed doing some DSD/PCM comparisons.
