Good find, cheers!

Page two is all the same names that post now... does this mean once you're in there's no way out?! Like the Mafia?!?!

Edit: My post was all misinformed lies!!

Double checking, it was out in 2012, and yen to GBP was roughly 126 to 1, making it just shy of £1600

Edit 2: I went a bit deep, and adjusting for inflation £1600 in 2012 is equivalent to £2,367.81 in 2024

I was thinking. Is this hobby still alive and well, or is it just full of a dying breed of old men and their Märklin train sets (cabinets)? And the only newcomers are here and quickly out, just to squeeze every penny out of pcb's?

It's just changed somewhat. Everything is so expensive and/or hard to find now that anyone seriously getting into it afresh (often from the fighting game scene) is usually limited to console/PC gaming on a Chewlix or similar, and they're usually content with that too.

When this forum started, there were new arcade games being released (1 or 2 CAVE titles a year), the Vewlix had just been launched, SFIV had resuscitated the fighting game scene and there were containers of CRT cabs coming over from Japan.

Been there done it & now have what I want in 2 much simpler multi set-ups in modern cabs which is what I wanted originally but there way out of reach at time.

If you want chit chat you can go over the road to UKVac & talk about air fryers ect :D

I've been lurking in the Swedish community since 04-05 something, but really got into it about 2013. I was more into cars in my early teens and early 20s :) I'ts been a fun ride for sure, but yeah it's crazy now if you compare it with the early days of "japan deals" with group buys from Tokyo, or even single buys.

On the other hand, EVERYTHING costs and arm and a leg nowadays. Try getting into racing or drifting now and arcades suddenly seems like a cheap endeavour. However technology has evolved to an extent were you have multis and easy to play solutions that doesn't involve crazy expensive hardware or the knowledge to repair them. There's room for all options.

Imagine trying to get into it completely fresh today if you didn't have anything. It would be so expensive it would take all the fun out of it.

Extremely hard to get your hands on a decent machine. If RKlok has an Astro or something listed, you're talking between €2,500 and €3,000.

Oh you want an Ibara PCB to go with that? That'll be another €1,400 euro mate. So potentially €4,000 for one machine and one Cave game.

After two months of play, some caps on the chassis go bad, monitor no longer turns on.

Annoying but not the end of the world and palatable to sort out if the cabinet cost you €700. Maybe not quite so if it cost you €3,000.

I switched from Arcade collecting to vinyl collecting, but during the pandemic the vinyl collecting hobby suddenly made a huge jump in "participants", especially for dance music 12". It's TEN times as expensive now, no exaggerating.

I don't even want to write online what my new subject to pour money into is, because I don't need ANYONE anywhere else finding out about it as it's surely a diminishing supply to get hold of in not time as it is.
