Is this an isolating transformer?

Post by stevie187 »

Hi guys my sega Harley la riders cab has this transformer in it:

I bought the machine with a tube and no chassis, so acquired a cheap Chinese universal chassis I want to at least have a go at. Problem is it needs an isolating transformer but I don't have any handy and I think most modern sega monitors didn't need them either. I have a feeling it isn't can you get multi output iso transformers?

Thanks
Steve

No, that's a standard Sega stepdown.

Yes and no. Most transformers are isolating (autotransformers excluded). The windings in that transformer are absolutely separated and do not share a common winding. Does it have special insulation between the primary and secondary winding? Probably not. Would I still use it on a monitor? Sure. But you do you.

Interesting thanks Nem! I did not know that, what are the chances of the insulation failing can I test continuity between both windings?

Your absolutely right Grant, there was no motherboard with this one...I am planning to put a PC in this one and just use as plain old 15khz.
