Aquario of the Clockwork /Tokei Jikake no Aquario

Post by Chris »

Any Ryuichi Nishizawa/ WonderBoy fans here? Here is an interesting article discussing the possibility of german publisher releasing Westone's lost SEGA system18 game: 'Aquario of the Clockwork".

Oh boy, how I love such news.
Do they release for Consoles or PC and I assume it will be a physical release?!
By the way, I read about Limited Run Games working on a license for the M2 Shoot Trigger games like Battle Garegga etc. for a physical.

Ah, very interesting. This has been rumourmill for the last 5 or so years I think! Nice to see things are actually bubbling up!
Of course it'll hit the download stores + next-gen consoles won't it..... I'd love to play it on a 15Khz screen cab though!

It's maybe getting finally released soon?

For anyone not familiar with it, it's a forced scrolling 3-player platformer made by Westone, similar to Monster Lair. It failed location testing back in the day and was shelved. M2's had it for a while.

From the looks of the UI elements, it's a 2 player simultaneous game with 3 playable characters. Unless there is an option for a 3 simultaneous characters, where else would the timer go instead of the upper center area between two players?

Wondered about that too. Maybe something was lost in translation and it was just a 2-player game with three characters to choose from. Does make more sense that way.

It wasn't necessarily a bad game. The timing was certainly bad. It would have released early 1994, during the fighting game craze.

A good arcade game is also one that makes money to ops. Platformers are difficult genre in that regards. Make it too easy and the player gets too much playtime over one credit, make it too hard and the player will not likely put another credit in it.

Strictly Limited have got it. Its not clear whether its the actual ROM or a rework from source. I'll be trying to get a Switch copy at least, Westone did some great stuff.

The Gematsu article has the press release where it says:
Some parts (including sound, music, and several graphics) were not recoverable from the source code, so the particular emphasis is placed on involving as many members of the original Westone team as possible in the project to be true to the game—from the chief programmer, Takanori Kurihara, to the musical genius, Shinichi Sakamoto, to Mr. Wonder Boy himself, Ryuichi Nishizawa, who expressed his joy and excitement about seeing the title screen again after 27 years on Twitter.
I read that as built from what was left of the source code and art plus new materials to fit in the gaps, and not singularly based on any of the ROMs that were on location test or anything 'final' beyond that... a bit of a shame, but if it's rebuilt from the source with many of the original team members involved, that's interesting in its own way. An improved version of what was lost?

agreed although some are appealing and the above is cute, I loathe alL these "strictly limited games type companys " so much so that ive just stopped buying from them or just the basic game only if its something i want ...they're no different than gamestop.

also 129 :wtf: nah

That's terrible. What happened to an extra slipcase and a small art booklet? There's no way someone actually wants all that crap.
