DDR Cabs

Post by dj_johnnyg »

Hi,
Think I'm starting my mid-life crisis phase :awe: and for some reason have decided I want to get a DDR machine.
Wife & kids are up for it, but I'm not sure which I should be looking for.

Can I buy an early version and use later software, or buy a later one and use earlier versions?

Just want the basic 4-way pads.

Cheers

Ddr are notoriously incompatible with eachother, for home use it is proboably best to get a cheaper cab and put a regular computer hack in it...

Looking like the cost is going to be the major factor here :awe: since the NZ Peso conversion rates to real currency means everything is a ****-ton more expensive, then shipping on top!

Looking at building a controller platform, then linking to either a console, or one of the windows based systems - since it will be cheaper, and keeps me out of mischief over the winter.

I'll keep my eye out for a 2nd hand unit locally as well, you never know...

I'm not bald or fat enough to buy a 911 (although I probably have the pre-requisite small willy), so a new cab it has to be.
Other idea is to build a Megalo clone cab, since 50" Rear Projection screens are cheap here. I'm tempted to try mount one on it's side for 50" Ikaruga.

I think it depends on your budget here, the second hand market in New Zealand isn't *huge* for DDR cabinets, but with the newest version DDR A (and A20 once it's fully rolled out) being officially supported in the region, there might be a little increase in the availability in NZ and Australia particularly.

Older cabinets are more compatible with newer games than you'd expect, the incompatibility generally comes the other way round (running mixes from 573 on an X generation cabinet is pretty much a no go) but you can run say X3 on a 1st Mix cabinet, as long as you get the appropriate hardware (which is a lot easier said than done). Stepmania conversions are pretty simple though, although you would lose a lot of light functionality without specialised hardware (Minimaid or the like)

On the higher end of the budget scale, I hear good things about StepmaniaX stages, and they sell out pretty quickly, I think they're now available for pre-orders but I have no idea what the backlog is like.
