Best/Favorite Soccer/Football/Fútbol Game

Post by Yoshi »

I'd like to add a single soccer/football/fútbol game to my cabinet's rotation. However, there are a ton of them, so I'm looking for recommendations. I know I like SNK's Super Sidekicks series, but there may be something better out there. What do others consider the best or at least their favorites?

I found the super sidekicks series to be utter balls. The gameplay is just terrible and bears no resemblance to actual football. Also imho the gameplay is actually worse in the later games, but people still pay more for them!

Goal goal goal and Tecmo World Soccer 96 are better. The carts are also dirt cheap, well, Tecmo is at least. They're still not great games though.

Virtua Striker 2 v2000 on Naomi is ok. I've never played the later games in the series but maybe they are better?

Soccer Brawl 8-)
I also like soccer on Capcom Sports Club.
For a more "realistic" one, i think Goal Goal Goal is really underrated

Goal Goal Goal has a great PK feature but lack a certain polish and suffers from slowdowns. I rather play Neo Geo Cup 98 which is basically Super Sidekicks 3 but in this I won the final against Argentina right before the World Cup in Brazil. So I knew already what was going to happen :P

I'm really curious about Ultimate 11 and the jamma Winning Eleven. Has anyone played/owned these?

I forgot this! Yes, Tehkan World Cup is great! If you have a cocktail cab is ace.
There is a mod to play with joystick on the original board too.

Thanks for the responses thus far. I'm going to look into some of the mentions I was less familiar with.

Taito did a series of games in the early 90's called Taito Cup Finals or Super Cup Finals. Awesome fun. Power-ups, assaults on other players, cheesy goal celebrations. What's not to like? Also Football Champ was OK but not as fun.

A bit more of a dedicated setup but I did like Virtua Striker 4. Probably should've kept it.

Apologies for this isn't very helpful or contributing to the subject, but console football games really killed the arcade form of calcio for me. I'm not saying you should play FIFA, no :whoopsie: no :whoopsie: no, I'm saying you might want to check out these under appreciated gems if you haven't already:
