[REL] NAOMI Multi-region BIOS

Post by p1pkin »

Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

Here is Christmas gift to community: modded Naomi/Naomi2 BIOS with region switching.
https://www.sendspace.com/file/11zffm

Use DIPSW 2-3 on filterboard to:

Code: Select all

DSW2 DSW3
OFF OFF Japan
ON OFF USA
OFF ON Export
ON ON Korea
both BIOS CRC-protection exploit and region changing logic was found/made by me personally.
shame *some persons* who uses results of someone else's free work commercially.

Thank you very much, sir! :awe:

Now, I can throw away my other BIOSes.

Question: what BIOS is it based on?

I don't see reasons why it wouldn't work.

technically its vanilla Naomi 1/2 bioses with nice 1byte-patch. that means the code which reads DIP switches and changes region depending on it was already in bios, made by Sega, but not executed in normal circumstances. so there was needed to just enable this code.

"updated 12/2014: NEW: SEGA NAOMI 1 and 2 Modbios 1.11 (JPN/USA/EUR/KOR - DIP Switch 3/4), MULTIBIOS!"

When I saw that on his site a couple of weeks ago, I initially thought that Joerg had done the work. Given his track record, I guess I should have suspected otherwise right then. He is to modding/hacking what Stv is to YAJ.

What a Cynthia.

Great work p1pkin, and thanks for sharing! Credit where it's due. 8-)

Thanks.

Probably almost this. As I see they uses DSW 3-4, that means they didn't find original region switching code which uses 2-4, so injected own code to do this.

What a ****.
I don't want to go deep into tech details, so I'll try to explain shortly -
in the term of BIOS modding, the main problem with HOLLY-chipset based systems (Naomi, Dreamcast, and others) is hardware checksum protection, which algorithm is still unknown btw.
so during all ~15 years life of DC-based hardware was unable to add/change code we want, except few lucky cases, when modded bioses passed check by the luck, because of CRC algo weakness.

it was so until this happened - http://forum.emu-russia.net/viewtopic.p ... 024#p23024"

does 'arcademodbios' guy(s) hacked/bypassed this security by yourself ? - I don't think so. I doubt they know how it works or even exists (the security checking/unlocking is well obfuscated, so if you don't know it is there - most likely you'll not notice anything at all ;) )

so, in my opinion sell things, which is almost entirely consist of someone else's work, even without giving credits - is a total [insert bad word(s) here]

Thx, such a nice christmaspresent.
Only tried out a few games on Naomi2 and JP/EXP but seems to work flawless so far.
No problem netbooting either btw if that question wasn't confirmed

Anybody check for HOTD2 compatibility, yet.

Gonna presume it that's the next step.
