The IGS PGM thread

Post by Paulie »

I know a couple of other PGM owners here on AO but by and large it's a relatively overlooked and IMHO underrated platform so thought I'd start something for anyone wanting to discuss IGS PGM :awe:

I'll kick things off for anyone who's unfamiliar.
It can be a fairly confusing system at first, what with the same game having multiple titles (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, US, Overseas & All countries except XX), multiple 'upgraded' games in the same series, KOV I'm looking at you and some games being released both or only on cartridge / standalone PCB.

Instant expert
* The PGM (PolyGame Master) is a JAMMA cartridge based system by Taiwanese giant IGS (International games System) which is very similar in appearance and architecture to SNK's Neo Geo MVS although apparently slightly more powerful.
* 29 game cartridges were released between 1997 and 2005 (the first ones being Oriental Legend and Dragon World II and the last being SVG)
* The games library consists of 10 Side scrolling beat em ups, 4 Fighters, 13 Puzzlers, a Run and gun and a Shoot em up. It's interesting and a welcome change that there's not a single sports title.
* Several of the games were released both as cartridges and as stand alone PCB's (Same as when SNKP released KOF 2003, MS5 and SVC on both formats).
* As well as the 29 'regular' cartridge releases a further 4 stand alone Cave PCB's were released (Do Donpachi Dai-Ou-Jou, Do Donpachi Dai-ou-jou Black Label, Espgaluda & Ketsui). Some guy in Europe makes cart versions of the Cave games but to create them he has to destroy legit carts :problem:
* Only one of the 29 cartridge games requires a TATE monitor (DDPBS) the the 28 are all YOKO. Of course all 4 of the standalone Cave PCB's run TATE.
* Games utilise up to 4 buttons per player.
* Some titles support up to 4 player simultaneous action with the use of a link up cable.
* There were 2 mobo revisions one had IGS PGM moulded into the red plastic cover and the other had a white/silver PGM sticker in this area. One revison has 4 solder points on the battery area and the other only has 2, other than that I don't know what if any are the other differences.
* It was a popular system in the Far East (China, Taiwan, Korea, lesser so in Japan) but relatively obscure in the West. In fact when I owned one first time around, information was really scarce as were the games, they were really expensive too. I honestly don't know if a single game ever made it into a UK arcade, at least I don't recall ever seeing one.
* The Varta battery, which is located on the lower RHS of the mobo is the PGM's Achilles heal. At some point this will leak and eat the traces if left unattended. So remove/ replace/ perform the battery mod. BTW mobo's do not need the battery so don't let this put you off.
* A couple of years ago I saw two pretty interesting KOV hacks from a Russian ebayer.
Street Fighter vs Knights of Valour http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/sh ... ber=300935" and SNK KOF vs Knights of Valour sadly I didn't pick either of them up at the time and I've not seen them for sale since.
* IGS launched the PGM's successor in 2008 (PGM2), it's a great system but has a very limited games library OL2, KOV2, KOV3, DDP doj & KOF98UM a couple of other titles made it to location test but I think that's as far as they got.
* The PGM3 is now doing the rounds (currently $368 from Legend (HK) trading but was over $900 when first released) but the only game currently available is KOV3 HD

Here's the IGS PGM motherboard and the 4 player link up cable
Image

And here's the complete set of all 29 IGS PGM cartridges.
I know it's been brought up here before regarding KBP, KOVSHP and OLSP being boots but it's been confirmed by IGS that they are official releases.

PGM games were released in quite a few territories/ regions and there were so many revisions it's difficult to keep up, so I thought it could be both interesting and useful to document these revisions. ATM there is little to no information out there regarding this side of the PGM so please feel free to contribute.

Hi,

Well I own

Demonfront
Knights of Valour
Knights Of Valour 2 Plus : Nine Dragons

I bought it solely because of Demonfront, KOV were bonus to this game. I don't like this beat em up series very much. I prefer others.

The only other game I consider being interesting is Dodonpachi II
Who are you? - Rufus

Dumb questions:

What's the maximum amount of buttonage that a PGM game can use?

Which region's games are the cheapest?

I love this system and I really have to buy more games for it...especially Demon Front and The Gladiator are fantastic, although I also think Spectral vs Generation is very nice and overlooked game.
The few games I have:
- Demon Front
- The Gladiator
- Spectral vs. Generation

I still really want to have KOV 9 Dragons, Martial Masters and DDPII.

It's a max 4 button system.

Awesome thread. :D

I’m a big fan of the system, the games are a nice change from the usual Capcom, Konami, Sega and SNK ranges. In addition to the system favourites, namely Demon Front and DodonPachi II: Bee Storm there is an awesome selection of fighters, scrolling beat-em-ups and puzzle games. Happy 6-in-1 even features an arcade cooking game!

I think i'm missing Knights of Valour Plus. Is the label the same as Knights of Valour? That could prove good fun tracking down. :lolno:

Nice thread. :)

I am also a fan of the system. I have done the battery mod on my mobo as well as changing all the caps.
One thing I wonder about is: the mobo with the white "PGM" sticker on top, is that a newer version of the mobo that has the "PGM" written in the red plastic cover, (Or vice versa?) ?

The only PGM cart I have is DDP2 Bee Storm which is pretty average I think. I wouldn't mind trying out Demon Front at some point. I've also got Espgaluda which is :awe:

I have to join this thread as this is one of my favorite systems, i really love it.

I only have a few games for it but Bee Storm (i know many people hate it) is definitely one of my favorites. I only own a couple of Cave PCB's but i already played them all at the arcades and this games still brings a smile to my face everytime i play it.

In terms of features and altough i never played the 4 player mode, i think this is really great for it's time and would love to play some beat em up action with 3 other friends.

I think the system is worth just to play these games:
- Dodonpachi II - Bee Storm
- The Gladiator
- Knights of Valour 2
- Martial Masters
- Demon Front

Hell, Bee Storm and The Gladiator put to shame all MVS's shooters and Beat em ups

Braintrash wrote:Is there multiple revisions / regions / etc.?
All mobos play all games but as for the games, this is where it can be a little bit confusing as games released in different regions have different titles.

I have carts from the following regions China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and All countries excepting China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea. There is also US and Oversea which I assume is in English for western countries but I could be wrong. AFAIK there isn't a definitive list of which games were released in which regions.

There are multiple revisions, but I believe these are mostly bug fixes but if anyone has more in this subject PLMK.
This French site is great has some good information on the subject of revisions http://pgm.database.perso.sfr.fr/"
TheRedKnight wrote:Which region's games are the cheapest?
I'm not really a follower of prices but from my experience it doesn't seem to make any/ much difference, in fact sellers rarely seem to mention what region the cart is from. It seems to be that if you buy from China/ Taiwan cart prices are cheaper than buying from Japan but I guess that's just because of the respective countries economic climates and it's doesn't always follow that if you buy from China you'll receive a Chinese region cart. labels can often be in poor shape or peeling off but that doesn't really seem to add or detract from the prices, occasionally artwork comes with the carts which should add a little more value. Kit's don't come up for sale that often and are always expensive although NOS KOV kits were being sold for peanuts a few years ago. Basically it doesn't seem to be like the MVS scene where there's a big following of collectors who obsess over region / condition / complete kits.

Cheers Jase :)

Yes, they have identical labels although often an orange/red sticky dot distinguishes between the two.
cthulhu wrote:I also think Spectral vs Generation is very nice and overlooked game.
Yes it's a really nice game, it's one of the more sought after carts but the standalone PCB often sells for very little money it's also available on PS2 and PSP for a couple of pounds.

Thanks man :)

Yes I wondered this too and also what if any were the other differences, mine has "PGM" moulded into the red plastic cover.

One of my friends had a PGM roughly 13 years ago. Was quite impressed with Martial Masters, but we were never able to fully grasp it because there was nearly no documentation available on the net. Did this change, is there a site or the like that offers movelists, an overview of the game system and so on?

The first time I had a PGM there were virtually no games or information available, thankfully the more popular games are now becoming fairly well documented.

Move lists here http://web.archive.org/web/200501230029 ... /skill.htm"

Gameplay/ Story/ Characters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_Masters"

Fairly in depth here, well worth a read http://translate.google.co.uk/translate ... rev=search"

Nice overview http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/martia ... asters.htm"

Another nice overview with a good long play video http://www.retrocollect.com/Articles/th ... sters.html"

Plenty of You Tube vids https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... al+masters"

MARTIAL MASTERS / XING YI QUANG / SHEN LI SHIN was released in Korea - Japan - Hong Kong - US - Taiwan and China so probably worth using Google translate for the various titles in the various languages for more information.
