or you could just have attached a normal USB bracket to the header

I thought the header was for connecting it TO the PC, not for the JVS side of things?

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration
Okay, unless I'm being truly thick it appears that the header is dual purpose? One set of pins is USB to the PC and the other is JVS to the I/O. If so I see what you're saying, I could mount it anywhere and use two internal cables - one from a motherboard header to the JVS-PAC and the other from the JVS-PAC to a USB bracket?
This would have a cleaner external finish definitely, and I could drill and tap a pair of standoff holes for mounting somewhere...
Am I assuming correctly?

Cools, you're absolutely right about the G&G thing. I played it yesterday and 0.65 is lovely. On Ghouls & Ghosts 0.65 is perfect and the sprites and foreground pop out, On Ghosts and Goblins, due to the palette, lowering the gamma takes the sprites down with it - but it's still all good.
You make a good point regarding Mame's default gamma setting. Especially for most people using LCDs. Deeper colour tends to look richer, and certain games are killed by a bright LCD. R-Type levels with backgrounds for example. These games were designed and tested with a cathode ray and it's a real shame they look like **** on 99% of set ups.
I'm sure I've ranted before about enhanced Doom engines looking terrible because everyone seems to have forgotten how extremely dark the game is supposed to be.

Oh yes, R-Type is totally wrong at default gamma. As is the sequel, it's horrendous at default but with gamma dropped a lot it's gorgeous. Leo is reasonable but still benefits a lot from having it dropped.

Does HD4000 work with grovy?
If so, this might be alright http://m.ebuyer.com/520042"
Edit, probably need to take sound over USB though, so that, hdmi to vga and msata ssd?

Maybe, but you've got a heck of a job setting it up with powerstrip etc and hoping. Easier to use an old Radeon. Grab an old Optiplex 755 SFF with a decent CPU and an X300.

Won't do CV1000 but most stuff will be fine.

Is cv1000 well emulaed yet? What kind of CPU power do you need?

Depends who you ask. The slowdown isn't, the rest is ok. Needs quite some grunt though. People say a 3GHz C2D is enough but I've got that in one machine and it struggles.

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration
I'm assuming a higher clocked i3 will be okay. Once I go ahead buying parts for the next one it'll be the best bang for the buck new CPU I can get, i3/i5 whatever.

Yes you are assuming correctly, and I probably need to update the web-page to clarify - http://jvspac.kirurg.org/?page=install"cools wrote:Okay, unless I'm being truly thick it appears that the header is dual purpose? This is from way back, but same principle applies, http://kirurg.org/drop/naomi-matx2.jpg"
You can use a standard motherboard USB bracket, one of the ports will be JVS and the other USB.

Excellent, I'll likely do that, I'm sure I've got a bracket sitting around idle. Will be cleaner than my cutting work!

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration
Interesting points regarding gamma, I found that the default gamma on Nemesis looks completely off - I think I had to drop it to .65 or so and then it looked like the real thing.

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration
That's another one where its dramatic. Fortunately MAME saves the setting per game so setting it is a one time effort. Unlike volume...

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration
Pretty sure this list is the most suited for MAME CPUs: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html#"
The high clocked 4xxx series i3s look the most suitable. Dunno about overclocking though.

For mame, I'm underclocking my C2D.
I didn't know there was anything that benefitted much from high CPU speed though.
Cv1000 could do with a turbo button.

The i3 4360 looks best to me at the moment. Once pay day rolls around that's a likely purchase, along with the rest of the required gubbins.

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration
Yup, once you look at the equivalent i5 you may as well look at the unlocked one and overclock, but the premium for that adds another third to the price.

Re: Mame in cab thread. Frontends, gamelists, configuration
Alternatively, picking an older motherboard gives a big saving, so at the moment I'm settling on the fastest normally clocked i5 I can find... I think.
