BOOTLEG CPS1 Final Fight:
Image

This was a CPS1 Final Fight bootleg I had and sold, not sure what the real one looks like exactly but this was a semi boot leg or something??

Just thought i'd put it up here for reference as I only found out it was not original after I sold and sent to France! :(

Also, how do you spot MVS bootlegs?

It might be worth "pooling" serial numbers of verified original Progears, perhaps we can narrow down the range of original Progears which would make conversions a little more obvious?

1) MVS cart case type not being legitimate I.E a clear Waku Waku 7 or whatever
2) Label looking dodgy

(these two aren't always a solid indicator, as it might be an original boardset inside a replacement case and re-labelled)

3) PCB board(s) are full of eeproms

This is not always an indicator, as some games were officially patched later on using eeproms, Fatal Fury 2 is one example, however it should only be a couple of eeproms and not the whole board.

4) Dodgy hand soldering (this is the main indicator)

Mix and match any of the above, if it ticks all the boxes, its a boot no doubt about it.

;)
On of the best way to check is the "serial" numbers on the chips. Original chips will have the game's ID number printed on them, only a few odd boards will be made up of different chips (Puzzle Bobble for instance uses 2 different sets of chips on the same board). This is especially useful to verify boards which have several eeproms (especially as two original boards of the same game may have different numbers of eeproms). Additionally, not all bootleg boards attempt to look like SNK boards. I have a bootleg MS5 in a clear case that looks nothing like an official board.

Label and case swaps are highly overated "checks". If you are a collector above having a simple "no bootleg" policy, then they are good ways of making sure you have "the best" version, but in general it's a flawed method for detecting bootlegs.

Streetfighter II Turbo - CPS1

Original - Official credentials easily spotted by the large CAPCOM stamps and chips. Unfortuntley this board has issues. My brother tried to repair it, and I believe he verified that all the chips were good, but the graphics still show glitches :-(

Bootleg - Bought many years ago with a cab, and was believed to be original. Now it is easy to spot as a fake a mile away....

Any JAMMA board that lacks a keyed connector should raise a red flag.
