Newbie with a Vewlix

Post by Wisepass »

Hey there...first time poster.

OK so I'm a pretty huge gamer not even quite out of University yet, who always had a dream of owning a cool arcade many years in the future when my misses thought we had enough money....

...Then on Friday I get a call from national radio to win a Vewlix SF4 machine... and I flippin well won it! I'm honestly on cloud 9 but I haven't received it yet and am attempting to find out as much as I can before it arrives.

So I was wondering if someone with a vewlix could explain to me how the thing works etc. I hear it runs on Windows and is basically a PC, but does that mean it boots into windows and I have to run SF4 from there? Also if I wanted to run other games on it what do I need and have to do? I've been attempting to search yahoo actions japan, but well its in Japanese so its not the easiest.

Anyway was just hoping someone could give me a photoed rundown of the machine its probably gonna make me far too excited but I already am.

OH and yes I realise I am the luckiest.....ever

Git. :D

It's PC/Windows at core but apart from initial boot and if it crashes you'll never know. You'll be able to run other games that run on similar hardware just by swapping the hard disk and security dongle.

JVS stuff such as Naomi games will require the relevant motherboard (not PC, custom) to be swapped in place of the SF4 motherboard. JAMMA stuff will require extra hardware - can't remember exactly what but you'll need a JVS>JAMMA, and possibly an upscaler.

Where areyou based Wisepass?

Mr Megalo mentioned to me that Capcom were thinking about giving away the Vewlix cabs & SF4 in the UK.

I suspect one or 2 to find their way on the ebay

In all honesy if I were you I would sell the SF4 & Type X2 mobo on asap. You could raise upto $3000 (at a minimum $2000) for just it.

You can stick a PS3 & SF4 in a Vewlix very, very easily with the help of Invizms JVS_pac & Pocket over $1500. It’ll also open up all the other PS3 games to you, Battle Fantasia, Tekken 5DR & all the rest of the cool arcade titles coming out this year.

You are one lucky mo fo :)

Heres hoping Capcom remembered to put retail SFIV hardware in there and not the "special" type Mr Meg was dealing with :D

Ah right security dongle huh. So in terms of drivers etc, can I put a new hard drive into the thing and boot normally to windows and play other windows games? ... basically.... from what I know so far I can only play SF4 single player assuming they dont bring me 2 vewlix machines (then my luck would be far to big)

So I'm wondering how I can use my new machine to its full but I don't want to damage or change anything I wanna keep it as original as possible but also as functional as possible....basically if I could play 2 player SF4 I'd be pretty ecstatic.

lol I'm not gonna sell it any time soon. But I'm based in the UK. This thing is like "the thing" I would buy myself assuming I won the lottery or something. Unless I really need the money it will be the last thing I sell, I'm already writing up my will to give it to my best friend who entered the same competition, cos I know he'll never sell it either.

But sticking a PS3 or 360 in it could be a good idea... but I'd want to use it as an arcade...as such so like xbox live arcade...but is there a way I could use the real arcade sticks instead of 360/ps3 controllers? (preferable without alot of modding of 360 arcade controllers)

That said.... if I can't how do I go about getting new games for the type x2?

So you are in the Uk ;)

PS3 is very easy that’s why I suggested it over the 360 (which is do-able) you essentially stick a PS3 inside the cab & wire it up with a little USB device (£40 ish) then you can play the PS3 as normal using the Joystick & Buttons on the Cabinet itself. Without getting overly complicated the little USB device between the Joysticks & PS3 converts the signals so the PS3 thinks it has a normal USB joystick plugged in.

If you do this you’ll have 2p on the cab for SF4 & everything else. There are some issues with the PShome button, but it’s a small compromise.

Type X2 is a PC, but its only designed to play Type X2 games. These come on HDD’s & are swappable. Things like KOF MIRA & Battle Fatasia are under £100 now. You need to buy them from Japan though.

The reason I say sell the Type X SF4 is due to it's value. You will be able to replace it in 1-2 years (should you really want to) for <£500.

Been reading about what capcomguru has done.... sounds interesting but perhaps a bit beyond me right now.... Anyone put a Jamma board in a vewlix yet? Know where I can get one? Have some pics?

Wisepass, got an LCD TV at home? You know how retro stuff looks crap on there? It'll be similar running older JAMMA stuff on the Vewlix. Its best used for the new HD tech and as its so expensive, putting a PS3 or 360 in there as people here have done is your best bet. If you want some nice arcade gear, pick up a Sega Naomi system. Its not HD but VGA resolution and still looks pretty good on there. Its also a lot cheaper with a great back catalogue.

Your probably right, I like the sound of a 360 in there best since its got a great catalogue of arcade games in HD on the thing. I'm wondering how much hassle it would be to stick one in and mount a couple of wired matcatz arcade joysticks up to it.

The machine hasn't arrived yet and I'm already getting offers...lol

The set-up looks pretty awesome Mr-Megalo definitely will do something similar, but really would prefer a 360, just for the arcade games on it... but then I've not had a lot of PS3 experience. What's this USB joystick converter thingy? and where can I grab one?

its called a JVS-Pac and can be got from a chap on here called "INVZIM" its for use with PC and PS3 only though.

i'm a 360 hater I guess, I wouldn't reccomend using a 360 unless it had cooling techniques imported from the arctic, but thats just my opinion of course

On the plus side at least it has VGA output. Switch the dash to the screens native output, grab a 2 RCA - 3.5mm phono cable and adapter and thats your sound and picture sorted. For controls, a couple of hacked cheap 360 controller PCBs is what you need.

Cab in the Vewlix:

PS3 =JVS pac, Vga lead, Rca leads
360 = Vga cable, Rca leads & hacked pads.

You'ld be looking at under £100 for either. The PS3 is neater as you don't have lots of wires running all over the place.

Seriously you could sell the TypeX / SF4 & set yourseld up with both PS3 & 360 (if you wanted) a 2p cp from Japan for the cab & still have £1500+ left over ;) You'll be bale to buy another Type x2 in 6 months for a fraction of that.

i'm always on the lookout for more TX2's especially SF4's at the moment

got a nice collection of CP's for the Vewlix aswell, and I can use a Sega I/O board incase I ever want to play analogue Naomi games like monkeyball and Sega Cp's (not that I own a naomi anymore, but others will want to do it at somepoint I guess)

HDMI cable + DVI adapter is a better and simpler choice with both Xbox and PS3.
