Use a UME EXE in clrmame. Import software lists. Set a different path for every single line in the system defaults window; do not nest folders. Rebuild ROMs using sys default paths. Put all the paths you want to use in your ume.ini file.
If I was home I'd do you some screenshots.
Cheers cools......i was with ya right up until "use a UME EXE in clrmame"!!
Seriously mate, how long must this have taken you to work out.... I'll revisit this after i've recharged what little of a brain i've got left in the morning...
For gods sake, its a carton box - not the holy grail!
Below are some screenshots of my clrmamepro and ume.ini paths as an example. Note that wordwrap is on. ROMPATH is a single line! Note also that the arcade paths all end with _roms - this is vital.

thanks for posting these cools....you weren't wrong about "specific" file/folder structuring.....Jeez!! im even more scared to attempt this now and realise this must have taken you bloody ages mate....good work though!!
So BIOS i take it relates to all the arcade shizzle, SOFT for home?
So each one of these is a potential "list" in maya then?

Bang on. Each folder becomes a list, except for the arcade stuff where you probably want to combine lists - dunno how this works with Maximus. UME itself doesn't care what structure you use as long as the files are in rompath, but clrmame will complain and screw up your ROMs if you're not careful about the pathing.
It didn't take me an inordinate amount of time to do this setup (realise that clrmame stores the profile settings as a plain text file), but took me quite some hours of messing about before I cracked how it was supposed to work.
For UME and MaLa each of the home folders becomes a list. The arcade stuff is handled internally by MaLa's own routines.
Just specced up another sff, this time a c2d 8600, xp64, 6gb ram.
Finished putting everything back on there last night and decided to have a blast on splatterhouse...it just doesn't get any closer than this ....the only issue now is the very, very occasional sound skip or introducing input lag by removing it.
Still gotta get a dedicated controller sorted for this at some point but part prices alone are holding me back on this!!
Got my tankstick but really can't be asked to remove that from my HS setup as I would have to keep swapping connections...etc.
