Arcade Casualties - the hobby where everything breaks
Figured it might be fun to make a topic to vent frustration.
Arcade games, arcade machines, for me at least, they're fault magnets. I can't seem to go a few days without something new ******* up royally. Today tuning the colours on a NAC, the red cutoff pot broke and is now stuck on maximum, making the cab unplayable Also attempted a repair on my Wellon VP-280 as advised by their support team, which screwed up big time ( to the point that I binned it).
****** me off! Sometimes I wonder why I put up with it. Share your latest arcade disasters to make me feel better about my misfortunes

Re: Arcade Casualties - the hobby where everything breaks
I had a Colour RAM fault on a Hellfire board I picked up for $5, located the faulty IC in a matter of seconds and thought it'd be a nice easy fix. New chip installed and nothing but white vertical lines scrolling down the screen, much worse off than before.

Re: Arcade Casualties - the hobby where everything breaks
It's the worst hobby in the world when things go wrong. Thankfully, I've had a good run lately, except for my Pony chassis falling off but thankfully it survived. In the last couple of years it's been crappy new PC hardware that's been the bane of my life.

Re: Arcade Casualties - the hobby where everything breaks
In my experience with this hobby when all is its an hobby
When something goes wrong it's after after with a lot of sprinkled in to the mix (I'm not too tecchy so what may be easy for some of you chaps often seems quite baffling to me)
It makes me sometimes I could if I fix something and alls again and all forgiven after a bit of
but usually turns to to
My current problem is with a boot Snow Bros board. All was well then a month or two ago I plug it in and graphics were glitchy in places, no sweat this has happend to tons of boards (and home console carts) in the past clean the edge connector and all will be good again. Not this time! I cleaned the pins no difference, I clean them again and still the same, I try some other boards on my supergun and all are fine, I try it again still the same. Get fed up with messing with it and pack it away. Get it out again the day after and mess with the voltages still the same, remove all socketed chips, clean and replace them, still the same, loose my wrag with it and back it goes. A few days pass it's back out again **** about with it, get frustrated and back it goes and that's the routine, I'm pretty sure that now I'll not fix it, but it's just drving me insane and I can't leave it alone, until I do something that eff's it up for good then I'll be wishing I just left it be until I had more info on when to do to fix it.

Welcome to my world. I take stuff out of the cupboard where it's been sitting at a comfortable temperature in anti static bag in a roomy box, stick it on and it's suddenly ****.
Either that or I tinker with something and **** it up myself.

Re: Arcade Casualties - the hobby where everything breaks
I've always stored them just the same as you mate except my pcb's are sandwiched and screwed to 2 thin sheets of MDF (top and bottom), for added protection, the board can't flex, keeps more dust off it etc etc, and I'm really really careful whenever I handle anything arcade releated, but still things go wrongskykid wrote:Welcome to my world. So it's not just me then. Although I maintain I do have a particular talent for this area of the hobbyskykid wrote:Either that or I tinker with something and **** it up myself.

I'm guessing they're stored horizontally instead of vertically then? You should switch them upright.Paulie wrote:I've always stored them just the same as you mate except my pcb's are sandwiched and screwed to 2 thin sheets of MDF (top and bottom), for added protection, the board can't flexskykid wrote:Welcome to my world. Re: Arcade Casualties - the hobby where everything breaks
Sadly I'm not as technical as a lot of you boys, it would be cool but I'm not too big to admit I know my limitations I'm still terrified of monitors and have never discharged one I can't even blame it on being a noob, I've had cabs since my early 20's, I guess some people never learnRossyra wrote:As good a reason as any to convert it to Progear
