Silent Scope 2 : Fatal Judgement Hardware error -11P issue

Post by Gilles54 »

Hi all,

I am having an issue with the Hornet board of a Silent scope 2 : Fatal Judgement Cabinet.

All the startup tests report good and when the game is supposed to start I am having a 'HARDWARE ERROR(-11P)' displayed.

I know we re a few having this error but as far as I know, nobody found a working solution.

If you can fix it (or know someone that can), please lmk.

Thx!

Thx steve.

Yeah he can but i have to ship the whole cage which weights a ton. Wondering if i can find a cheaper solution, like buy your Nba play by play and use the parts ...

If the fault is the NVRAM you cannot use othergame motherboard.
NVRAM contain some sort of protection, If you swap cpu board you have to swap also the nvram

Hi. This is Craig from Turnarcades custom arcade machines. Although it's not normally our thing, I was given a non-working Silent Scope 2 machine by a friend of a friend and thought that maybe we can hopefully get it working again. They told us it was previously working but suddenly stopped loading properly and they have no time to see about getting it fixed. The machine powers up and the monitor, speakers and psu fan all seem fine, but the marquee light and gun scope screen are not coming on and the game is not booting at all. We've taken most of it apart, cleaned the inside and all connectors etc, but still no joy.

The marquee light is likely just a bulb and I imagine the gun monitor only comes on with the game so not too concerned with them, but what is of concern is that the LCD display on the pcb housing cage is flashing between "Er" and "01", but I'm unable to find out online what this means. The reason I've posted here first is that this post points to forum member Giz10 for help with another SS2 fault and when I looked on the pcb cage in my machine, there's a white sticky label with "serviced by Giz10" written on it, so I suspect this is the same person and hope he can help. I would like to contact him for help if he's still an active member here but can't because I don't know how ( or even if) I can search for members here, so could someone point me the right way or to someone who can help?

Ahh another Konami hornet with a RTC gone bad. Replace the RTC and hold Test while powering up. Hold the Test on the filter PCB or the motherboard though.

Thats what indication I have gotten with my Gradius IV efforts. I haven't busted out the soldering iron yet to repair the board, but this is apparently the technique used.

Thanks guys for the info. I think I'll try the power-up w/test switch method tomorrow then drop my namesake an e-mail if it's not working. Reading up I gather that the RTC chip can be replaced with a working one flashed using a MAME dump, so hopefully it's not too pricey.

Two more questions; where is the correct test switch on this 3-tier PCB, and if all else fails what can I expect to pay for the repair/chip replacement? I'm hoping to hang onto this machine myself so it would be great if I can get it working again.

The top PCB which we will now call the CPU PCB, has two switches on it. One resets the board, and I believe that one is next to the RTC chip which is nearest the JAMMA connection pins (which probably doesn't help you, because your board won't have JAMMA) Hmm. Hold board so all power cords are at the top, and connectors are at the left. Lower left hand corner, big blocky chip is RTC. Theres a switch there, and I'm PRETTY sure thats the reset switch. If you tap it and the board resets, well, I was right. Theres another switch in the middle on the left side. I think that one is the test switch. The easiest way to make sure you do this right is to hold the test switch and then push the reset switch, Konami games are awfuly fussy about when that test switch is held down and they're just happier if it's done before they're even on.

You don't have to flash your RTC chip. Despite popular opinion, before a dump of the RTC was added to mame, you could get all the hornet games to run by simply holding the test switch and powering it on. This works for any and all faults involving NVRAM on Konami hardware from about... oh, 1989 and up. This resets any NVRAM on any Konami game that has it, only after the Hornet or so, the System 573 revolutionized the process by simply detecting NVRAM and RTC errors and asking you to push the test switch to reset them and continue, rather than forcing operators to figure out how they were going to plug in an arcade machine with one hand while their arm was holding a tiny little switch inside the arcade machine with the other.

I still have not found a good source on the RTC chips for these. I really wish I could, because they're the same ones on the System 573, a computer that is about to be worth its weight in gold if someone doesn't find a replacement RTC and start fixing them. All those DDR machines are going to need repairs soon as these batteries start to die, leak inside the closed cap, and then eat away at the actual RTC hardware. That is the actual failure here.

Thanks for the in-depth background and after looking on the board they are in fact labelled as reset and test respectively. However, on trying the method you suggested there is still no visual response on screen. The Led display changes from flashing 'Er' and '01' to filling in all the led segments then flashing up 're' briefly, but nothing happens either through visual change on the monitor, no sound through the speakers and nothing else to indicate it's changed anything.

One thing to mention is that the pcb's, whilst all correctly stacked and screwed together with risers, is not screwed securely into the cage. I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but the cage is laid flat inside the base of the cabinet and the plastic risers under the bottom pcb lift it off the cage floor so hopefully this is ok? Is there any kind of earthing failsafe perhaps that stops the pcb powering up if not correctly secured inside the cage?

Are you sure the error code I'm getting (01) is in fact an RTC problem or is it an assumption based on the symptoms I'm getting? So far it looks like I may have to recruit giz10 to offer some advice or pay to have a look at it... But I want to exhaust all avenues first.

Hy Franco, ain't spoke to you since R3play, but then I ain't been on the BYOAC forums much recently cos we've been way too busy! Might be holding some gaming open days at our arcade showroom in the Summer, so I'll make sure you get an invite!

Certainly looks like it, unfortunately.

I'm not sure how holding the reset button would get you past an 11p error as the info in the RTC chip has to match the game code, if you look on the first boot up screen the board id (GX number etc) will be missing so it refuses to do anything after doing an IC test, I will try it on a board with a bad timekeeper though just to check. However, Turncades board isn't and RTC for sure.. I would need to see it to try and figure out what the problem is with this one.

Tested, I can confirm holding down reset or test does nothing when you have error 11P which is the NVRAM. I can see how it would work on older hardware like GTi Club as the NVRAM isn't used for security.

time passes and more batteries die (~10years long...)

theguru of mame, claims to have the DIFFERENT dumps !! because there are THREE different version for each game :palm:  and of course if you dont have the correct region "code" you cannot resume it to life.

but there are some codes that talented people got, and saved their carts. (because theguru is silent on this, didnt gave the precious info of 8bytes !!)

there are some chip replacements if you read on Klov, it's about Dallas ds1643 if i'm correct and the M48T58Y or M48T58

i'll attempt too in some months when i get back holidays... 1/3 of luck to save it... (and still dont know if my pal burner can do this stuff)

Apologies for digging this old post up, but did you ever find the solution for the Er01 issue? I'm currently having it and am struggling on how to fix it!

Cheers,

Dan
