Konami Windy Mk ~1 ~ Refresh ~

Post by Neo Gold »

Good Evening guys....

NOT Another Windy!?...afraid so!! :awe:

Well, way back in the Killer cabs days i bought a Windy Mk-1 From Chi...it was quite tatty & scraped / gouges / cig burns etc, etc ..you name it, but the monitor was a burn-free Tosh & that counted for something..had to have it as i always had a soft spot for these Candy's! :awe:
So as you all remember..i gave it a bit of tlc + a re-paint & it came out pretty good, was eventually sold to Joe..who i think may still have it!
I still have the photo's of that machine & the wacky home made Red plex marquee! :)

So Back in April 2021 One came up for sale...from Markedkiller!...was up for sale for a few days so i simply could not resist!...mark was great to deal with and we exchanged a few pm's & photo's of said machine & exactly what was done to it...what it needed etc etc..15k cab!..i'm in.
It was delivered to my old address via Martin & it was well packed up with an original 'konami plex marquee' with NO cracks!...15 years before this i simply could not find one for my old restore...so made my own, also Marks cab was in better condition...no bad gouges etc...it was just yellow with cigarette smoke...was easily cleaned off with G101 detergent...but the paintwork was past it 'old yellowed clearcoat & poor paint finish ...decals shot.

Mark said it came to him DOA & so junked the orig Tosh & aledgedly bought a cyberlead for parts..so the Tube & chassis were swopped over for the Windy to 'live' again!....So a Toei chassis + an Orion Tube..mark explained~
It was said the Monitor was the best bit of the Candy..., Burn free + ridiculously Bright!?...superb Geometry albeit slight corner convergence.
Mark said the tube face' curvature fit the bezel 100%....it certainly did , however to clear the inside tube support panel it had to be tilted & packed with washers!!..
Well i said no problem...i'll sort all that out myself ..so a straight forward easy going restore here...literally.

Its been that long ago ..i cannot even remember powering it up & trying the monitor...so i took marks word for it as he's a decent guy & known of him way back...so its all cool. 8-)
So as i was quite busy...i literally stripped the whole cab & Bagged tagged all parts ready for when i started...& i literally started just a few days ago!!
Here are a few photo's of it when it lived at Marks!!...i'll update the thread as & when.

It even came with stock colour buttons...No green 1p or 2p though!!....i have to say , i think there the worst sickly coloured stock factory i know of...not sure on this cab , think i'll deviate for something different.
What were they thinking...white is lost & the pink!?...

Really looking forward to this restore as I also had one of Mark’s Windy’s.

Mine was pretty good nick too, so far fully stripped, cleaned, fitted a stereo amp, recapped chassis (Grant) really nice cab.

New sticks, buttons too in pink, Green & White.

Looking forward to seeing the thread progress. :awe: Will you be using a pearlescent paint for the restore?

Have to agree with the stock button colours, I have orange and yellow on both of mine with green start buttons.

Not a great picture but the best I could find whilst at work.

I think Cools had the same orange/yellow but with yellow start buttons.

Yeah. I matched the logo/accent colours with the buttons because the stock is so bland.

Still undecided over button colours...but if did use stock colours...it would have to be seimitsu, a black case around the white button gives some definition & look far better.
I think on my original Windy i used red ball tops/black shaft covers..& those nice skeleton buttons with a staggered 12b colour pattern/white+ red....still have the photo's in photobucket...i''l pop them in here soon.
Here's more photo's as i stripped it down 3 years ago!!...checkout the cardboard box for the chassis...class that Mark! :wtf:
What a filthy old yellowed bugger it was...

Checkout the cable ties holding the chassis in 'dammit' mark!! :palm:
'NOTE' my old house was an excellent storage facility for Candy cabs until i made space for them at home!.
I had the missing TOP monitor seat brackets that had come unglued...so easy clean & epoxy back into original positions....
This is very easy restore...no damage, just have to prioritise three faults.....
1. Mount tube in frame correctly to meet bezel AND clear the monitor rear support bracket..easy job + four steel spacers+supports to fabricate.
2 . Simply extend remote chassis adjustment pcb wiring 'TOO SHORT!'....no worries there.
3. Fabricate brackets/ support tray for the Toei chassis....so it looks professional ' factory like.
4. Bring back to life each painted panel back to how it used to be when it was new....all cosmetics + attention to detail..as clean inside ~ as outside.
I really hope its worth it when i power up that monitor!!. as the correct paint color 'pearlescent white' cost me a small fortune... :)
Its not like a solid colour...with just a sealer/primer/ top coat to do...you have an isolator/base white/pearl/then final clearcoat....so no misstakes!!.

Really, really easy to strip and reassemble.. Everything is light and can be moved upstairs and rebuilt.. One man cab.. Not like some Aero, madonna, E2 etc.. Where you're left with one large steel shell one person cannot move upstairs!..
I like windys.. 👌

All apart from the monitor which I find a real pain to put back in, getting out not quite so bad.

I lie the Windy on its back and go for the big lift!

100% this

I took mine apart, trudged it upstairs and put it all back together pretty easily.

In comparison, I’ve got a U4 upstairs that took two people to do and I can’t ‘undo’ the move on my own.
Worse still, I’ve got the massive Electrocoin six slot (your old one!) upstairs, which took three people even after stripping most of it off. It’s never coming down again. I might have to sell it with the house :lolno:

Back on topic, the mighty @wigsplitta gave me a spare Windy II CP surround that I’ve been intending to have resprayed. Watching this closely to see if it’s even vaguely realistic to do myself…

Gods work you’re doing here, sir. Always love your restore/refurb threads 8-)

You did great getting that Electrocoin upstairs!.. I remember that cab well... Arcade club round the corner from me has a couple..
Cheers Chris, I'm doing abit more on the windy tomorrow...
Re: you're panel... Prep it well and degrease, use a criss cross pattern and finish off with a decent quality clearcoat..use the one I recommended to Geldra a few months back.. Its literally 'glass in a tin'.. I popped a photo of it in front of a wheel I used it on a few years back.
On a small part you will get away WITH RATTLE CANS!!.

Ooff!!.. Careful steve, keep you're back straight!..
Those chrome handles are great.. I personally think it's the easiest monitor to rotate in all the cabs I've owned..
Everything is easy to disconnect though the large cover in the back... I wear those grippy gloves so not to loose grip.

Ok...i'm very happy with this, this is it ...official Konami Pearl white..not metallic..not metal flake...proper pearl white.
So with this tester panel..i now know how to lay this paint..technique :) .
My god is it hard to take a decent photo to show the effect...& in-house lighting makes it look cool too.
In one room i have flourescent lighting & it looks different to the room with LED lighting!!..gorgeous deep effect though...over the moon.

Devilbiss FL-5 for the win!... :D
Looks far far better in person..

Remember...this is a three stage paint...so 1 - Base colour- 2- Actual Pearl- 3- 2k clear-coat...then buff if you wish. i was happy with the shine anyway 'factory'

If the Monitor is **** when i have finished this i'll fit a fish tank into it !! :awe:
I never took photo's..but these are the steel 16mm spacers i made to properly step the tube up to the BEZEL to CLEAR the monitor ABS plastic mount so it does not touch the TUBE !!...spent my time getting that perfect...and its better than that tbh..looks factory..i'll pop photo's when i RE-assemble!.
NO wobble now mark when these are bolted to the FRAME!!

I remember my first candy in 2009. A chopped upright Naomi. I painted in "bluelite pearl". I remember most people hated it because it wasn't "stock"
Excuse the potato quality on some of those photos.

Its all personal preference really...i think you done a great job there pal, & that home made 'blue pearl' cp looks great to me.
You did not do it for other folk...you sorted that cab for yourself... 8-) 8-)
Me..i like to keep as close to stock as possible...but i like the fact of me doing a 'special' in custom 'Neo-gold' ~heavy metalic flek' one-off kinda project.
I'll see what pops up for this restore , sometime in the future.
