Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania

Post by SuperPang »

The first two SMB games are getting remastered! I am more hyped for this than any new release. Super Monkey Ball is the greatest game ever made. It's not even close.

Got the Digital Deluxe version. This review is pretty much spot on. It's a tad disappointing.

Banana Mania certainly illustrates how games have changed in the last 20 years. You now have infinite lives. Mini games are unlocked from the start. Bananas are basically currency for buying characters, clothes and stupid poses for the new camera mode. It also keeps trying to persuade you to use the "helper" tool, which I haven't tried yet but I presume is some sort of slow motion. If you save up enough bananas you can even purchase a jump button.

Of course, you don't have to use these features, and there is handicap-free online ranking for hardcore players. The idea is to make the game appeal to a wider (younger) audience I guess, but games were hard when I were a lad and you were were rewarded for perseverance.

Monkey Target is completely ruined. Different physics, different platforms, different power-ups on the wheel. Most of the other mini games seem largely unchanged, so why they would do this is beyond me as this mode alone has a cult following. A lot of players (including myself) are understandably **** off about this.

The main single player mode is generally fine, especially when you put the OST on (which is, of course, DLC). I am really struggling with the Xbox thumbstick though. It seems very loose, and I hadn't realised just how useful those 8-way nooks on the GC thumbstick were for those narrow straights.

Like that review said, this is the best Monkey Ball in years, but it's an imperfect repackage knocked up in Unity for generation Z, and a reminder of how special the GC games are. Everything from the precise physics to the sound effects come together to form a really unique experience that's hard to recreate.

tl;dr Just buy a Gamecube.

Just finished the medium difficulty mode in monkey ball 1 on nintendo switch. It was very hard and frustrating, I lost tens of lifes, but at the end, I felt accomplished by overcoming such difficulty. I will take a deep breath and attack the hard mode now. I knew the monkey ball series from speed runs and gaming magazines, but never played it until now. It is indeed a great, great game. The new graphics are also a big step up comparred to the original
