SUPER TANK WARS!!

Post by Akuma »

Hi everyone,

it's been some time when I was more active here. Anyway, wanted to show you, what I have been doing instead of studying:

Please note: ALPHA FOOTAGE!!

I have been working on an arcadesque shmup / 2P Versus hybrid called SUPER TANK WARS!! (or SUPER SENSHA TAISEN!! in Japan). Still far from being finished, but the 2P Versus mode is already coming along pretty neat. I got the go-ahead from Desura to publish it as part of their Alpha-Funding program and plan to get on there in early August. Also, the game is currently on Steam Greenlight and if you like what you see, I'd be more than happy to get your YES votes here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/f ... =260475432"

And of course, if you'd like to give me your suggestions or thoughts, I am all ears.

Cheers,
Alex

Looks cool gameplay-wise. What are you planning to change between this and release? I hope a lot of graphics are placeholders for example.

Indeed. I started alone and now got a musician on board. Next step is a proper Anime-artist who can do that classic Konami style that can be found in games like the Parodius and TwinBee titles from 1990 till 1995. He will then do proper character designs. The Tanks will get more colours (obviously) and each character will have their own Special and Super Attacks which you'll need that Super bar in the lower left and right for. And a lot more stages will be added, to make it as diverse as fighting around the globe in like Street Fighter. When the 2P mode is done, We will work on the Singleplayer Story Mode and if we are lucky, we will focus on online Multiplayer and console ports after that.

Good to hear! I thought some of the ingame stuff looked acceptable already, but the texts and character portraits etc mainly were very homebrew-y :) it looks promising, curious how the rest of the development will go. Unrelated, but considering opponents i always thought the old dos game Nuclear War kicked **** :awe:

Glad that you list those points, because they will definitely get reworked. I am also still not satisfied with several tiles, so a lot of them will get redone as well, I guess.

Well, if it does for you, how about an analysis why it does or what could be improved? I guess I should have recorded the gameplay while playing against a 2nd player

I think it looks great Akuma.

Toy Tank Street Fighter is a brilliant idea. You can add almost limitless flair and crazy ideas with characters/tanks and moves, but you have a very simple and solid basic game underneath which anchors everything.

It has a lot of potential. And it looks like the gameplay is very snappy.

I like the thought of pretty twinbee-esque scenery eventually getting smashed and ruined throughout the match.

8-) actual two player action would probably look a lot more fun. :)

I suppose that would help instead of the other tank just sitting there waiting for death :awe:

Looking like it is going to be a lot of fun akuma!

What language / libraries are you using to make the game?

Thanks, doing my best : )

I am using GameMaker Studio with GML scripting. Looking to implement shaders at a later stage. No need for additional libraries or extensions yet, luckily : )

Nice one. I've seen some decent stuff done in Game maker. Keep at it! I love tank games :)
