Phillips CDi

Post by ninjawyatt »

I was having a glance at old consoles on the bay and I remembered that Phillips contraption. I was back at school when they were out and I seem to remember that the 3DO, CDi and Jag all came out around the same time. I also seem to remember that they were all damn expensive for a home console! Hence why I had to stick with my Mega-Drive, Snes, or whatever console I had at the time.

Did anybody actually have one of these on release? If so, whats your feedback of it? Were they overpriced glorified movie players, or were they actually any good? Also, how the hell were you supposed to play games on that pad which looked like a TV remote?!? :eh:

I remember that SSF2T was a 3DO title, but did anything remotely decent come out for the CDi? I'm curious to know because I have never owned one or even played one. Most people I speak to have never even heard of one....maybe they do just suck....

There are a couple of Zelda titles on the cdi. Not real games though, interactive animation or something. :problem:

So the verdict is out - Not really a console, more like 'Interactive Poo Chunks'. Looks like I didn't miss anything then.

I would have liked a 3DO though, especially for SF. SSF2T and SSF2X are the same game? Who knows, maybe I will get one from ebay one day and live the childhood reality I could never afford :( Or did my parents just think that my Mega-Drive and SNES were good enough :problem:

NCage, NGage, N.., yeah whatever.

Apparently the only reason why you might want one in this day and age is to play a **** Korean 2D fighting game or some first person RPGs that look like crap. :wtf:

Loved mine at launch,

Seventh Guest
Burn Cycle
Voyeur
Mad Dog Magee

Really good examples of how the Media could work if the effort was pur in.
Cost's were silly, the Big original model was £400 the Digital Video Cartridge was another £175, and that was not out at launch.

I remember wanting a CDi pretty bad in the early 90s - I used to watch the advertisement videos run at Dixons and Currys showing the games and being wowed.

I was a massive fan of Mad Dog McCree in the arcade and this was the only system that had a decent port.

It wasn't until the 470 came out for £299.99 that my parents offered to buy me one, I went for a SNES and a new TV instead :)

I do own a CDI 220 now though, plenty of great games to play:

Thunder in Paradise
7th Guest
Dragons Lair
Dragons Lair 2
Brain Dead 13
Space Ace
Mad Dog McCree
Mad Dog 2
Who Shot Johnny Rock
The Last Bounty Hunter
Crime Patrol
Drug Wars
Escape from cyber city
Burn Cycle
Lemmings
The Apprentice
Voyeur

There's plenty more, you'd be surprised.

I was also a massive fan of the 3DO, seeing them at Game of the massive rear projection TVs really made me want one. Unfortunately it was near the time of the PlayStation being released so I got one of them instead :)

I do have a 3DO now though, some of the games are fantastic, you'll like it especially if you have nostalgia of looking at the screenshots in magazines about the games for the system.

Seem so you live in Derby, I may as well save my money and come round to play on your consoles ;)
