Sanwa Prototype D-Pad Stick & Magnetic Sensors
The magnetic sensors one is claimed to be silent. "Ooooh!"

Re: Sanwa Prototype D-Pad Stick & Magnetic Sensors
Wtf... Do they really think someone would decide to use that **** D-pad on top of the joystick instead of the actual joystick?

I thought it was obvious that you use both at the same time for different things.

There's something comforting about the click of an arcade stick.

Sanwa have shown off a lot of prototype stuff at amusement shows that never goes into production.
Silent sticks and buttons are already available but I like a click. Only really useful for high level tournaments and new parents.

Re: Sanwa Prototype D-Pad Stick & Magnetic Sensors
Definitely! Anything that doesn't click reminds me of the horrible C64 Cheetah Annihilator sticks. The only sound they made was a snap as the plastic gave up the ghost or a pop as the desk-suckers came unstuck at a critical moment. I can't remember how many of those things I broke playing Daley Thompson's Decathlontheevilfunkster wrote:There's something comforting about the click of an arcade stick.

Re: Sanwa Prototype D-Pad Stick & Magnetic Sensors
I don't think I would like a click-less stick, the arcade experience I'm after wouldn't be complete.
May be the natural evolution - like the LDC cabs -, but changing subtle bits like that will make me steer away from the main reason I've got old cabs to begging with.

But seriously, what is the point in a D Pad on top of the stick?

Re: Sanwa Prototype D-Pad Stick & Magnetic Sensors
I don't get it either. You'd surely have to use one or t'other? I can't think of anything that'd call for you to hit say left & right simultaneously. Maybe for a quick left-right motion or something but I reckon it'd be easier and far less awkward to just swing the stick from left to right than hitting left on the stick then right immediately afterwards on the d-pad
Maybe if you were in the mood to use a pad or had mates round that couldn't use a stick... begs the question why not just buy a pad too though? Bah
...or maybe people that for some odd reason have persevered and forced themselves to use one of those ridiculous Hitbox keyboard hybrid things would like it just because it's different and would open up loads of super-advanced techniques unavailable when using a stick?

Map buttons to the pad and play one-handed.
So wrong it's right.

Re: Sanwa Prototype D-Pad Stick & Magnetic Sensors
All I can think of is independent aiming with the d-pad, like Midnight Resistance, or a thumb controlled camera. Both of these already work better with an analogue solution though.

It'd be great for that right enough. Codemasters missed a trick there.

Bind D-Pad to fire, and here you have a super-cheap way to play Forgotten Worlds.

Re: Sanwa Prototype D-Pad Stick & Magnetic Sensors
Something like Robotron, where you could fire and move in independent directions; d-pad for direction of fire, stick for movement, and buttons for firing each weapon (plus hand-to-hand weapons).
