Future Classics

Post by SuperPang »

So I've been playing some Sonic The Hedgehog, the MD original. It makes me want to throw my 360 in the bin FFS. Truly a game changer. I want to go back to 1991 and see my 9 year old head explode again.

Seriously, what are kids today going to fondly look back on in 20 years and label a classic? Call Of Duty? Pfft.

I'm honestly struggling to think of anything that will stand the test of time, especially as the arcade style of simple addictive gameplay has all but died out. All the good games seem to get sequel after sequel and are often improved rendering earlier versions obsolete.

Discuss.

Castle Crashers comes to mind. Probably other indie games or XBLA games.

Probably nothing. Such is the consequence of gaming going mainstream.
(I mean along the lines of FPS games.)

If you can still download them :D
Must give Castle Crashers a second chance. There was a bit too much going on for my liking.

Rez was the last classic game as far as I'm concerned. Honestly, I can't think of a single game after Rez that I would want to ever replay again. I keep some recent games in my collection that I like to think I would want to go back to for a second time (like Uncharted or Mirror's Edge), but honestly, I have a really hard time seeing myself going back to any of them.

Mehz.

Jet Set Radio, but that's hardly current gen.

Can't really use the graphical upgrade reason for a game being a classic or not. DOOM is ugly as hell nowadays but still massively playable in its original form.

Katamari.

Think of games that create an atmosphere that sucks you in, those are the ones that'll live on.

Bioshock.

Ninja Gaiden.

Or the ones that do something unique and simple. Portal (even though I dislike the Portal games, they'll go down in history)

Eternal Darkness.

Not a huge number, but think about how many 16-bit games you can actually still play happily for hours on end nowadays after hammering them previously. Not many I bet.

If you are talking in general and not niche... Then you are looking at a very sad state of future affairs.

1. Modern Warfare ****.

2. Grand Rape Anal IV.

3. Just Nonce.

4. Zumba Madness.

5. Wii.

6. A whole load of sad Facebook games.

7. I'm getting sad now....

8. Getting angry....

9. Wii...

10. F*ck this!

Isn't that a good thing? If they are actually improved.

Rayman Origins. Probably the best the game I've played since Mario Galaxy.

I believe it's more to-do with age than anything else (age means your personal preference changes, you start to like wine, and apperciate some older women, read books etc).

I am sure to 14/15 year olds the latest gaming is great to them - and in the future they'll be having the same conversation.

I enjoy living on planet delusion.

I agree that we must confess to the rose tinted factor, as with music and movies and the like but I do think there is a distinct lack of originality from the games industry these days. You have to break the mould to create something that will stand the test of time but consumers seem happy with the same old **** in different packaging.

Nintendo do still manage to do the big franchises justice but the rest of their output is so lazy I've lost all interest.

True, buy Nintendo if you want 5 to 6 games tops, they'll be 5 or 6 of the highest calibre games though - also if you got a young family then Nintendo also wins, 360/PS3 is aimed to much a set market for my likings 14-25 really.
