The game pays homage to MK 1,2,3 and UMK3 plus the mass fan demand of going back to 2D and Mature rated. One thing they have been stressing alot is the fact with Midway no longer in control, they say they now have time to properly balance the gameplay and focus on it being tournament worthy as well as hardcore player advancements like frame counting.

Something the series have never been known for. They have never said they wanted to do this in the past but with little room in the 2D fighter market you have to get it right or not even bother. Seems like there is a tag mechanic in there so maybe this could be its winning hook.
I dont think they can help themselves when it comes to gimics. But it is in flavor of MK but it looks like its something which would take away from the actual gameplay *flash* cutscene *bone breaks* groan in agony and then back to comabt.

I think they figured out if you make the game playable it sells for many months after its initial release not just a quick burst before christmas and then you get a drop off in sales as people quicky loose intrest in a broken game.
