Naomi Sitdown - JAMMA converted

Post by tetsujin »

Well, here we are again, another Naomi restoration by me!

After a bit of a thought gathering process away from most things game related and doing other things in life I decided I missed the whole 'scene' of the arcade world.

The chasing, the collecting and the playing. So here I am back again :)

I started off looking for a Naomi but then had my heart set on another Astro. As I am the impatient type, I lasted a few days and got offered this Naomi cab off Spectre that was in mid project phase. Needed some TLC and thought I could do this while waiting for an Astro to come along :)

Picked it up on Thursday and before throwing it all back together I thought it deserved a clean, so out with the Power Bath (I use this on the shower and works a treat so thought I would try it here). and it did wonders! :D

Back home...

Gave it a good scrub with a dish pad and then got to work attacking the rusty base. Someone had also decided in the past to attack this with a screwdriver to try and steal all it monies but the damage as not too bad.

after a good clean all was good! :D

Started to get the rust away and down to bare metal so I could get a nice smooth and good surface to pain.

Rub down the paint...

I don’t have and 'painting pictures' as was just doing it rather than thinking about taking pictures.

Gave all the parts on the cab a clean before they came up to the games lair.

Only have this pic so far of the base all fitted. Looks great IMO.

And had a sneaky play...

Will get some pictures of it all complete once its ready as at the moment the control panel and plastic surround are yellowed and in need of some love.

Also Nitromoor’s attacked the sides and started to sand them back to Japanese style leg covers.

more picture soon... :)

Cheers Mark xxx

Im not sure on the monitor but its defo just a 15k monitor and has a MS9 nanao chassis but not the Tosiba tube so the curve is a bit out - think similar to the ones in a Egret 2. :) Obv not the original Naomi monitor. ;)

Ah, different monitor... Is it easy to change a chassis? Would love to convert my Naomi monitor to 15 khz.
Do you also have Franco's wiring fitted for the jamma side of things?

Im sure it is but I didnt actually change the chassis on this, it had a monitor swap so this must of been out of another cab etc.

Right! Another day, another update.

Wanted to start work on the upper monitor and control panel plastics as it was a lovely night with no wind so ideal for painting outside!

As you can see its black, and has a nasty, deep gouge in the top near the light. I have another white surround but that has damage on one of the bolt holes which although hidden when using the bolt covers wasn’t something I wanted to paint incase someone else wanted it and other than a bit yellow is ok.

Image
Image

The lower CP plastic has two screw holes either side of the instruction strip (I guess for attaching something in the past?) but these needed filling and painting to match the other plastic.

Image
Image

Using some car body filler, I went about filling the holes but before I did, I prepared the holes so they are flat and would take the filler and stick.

Started with counter sinking the holes…
Image

Then used some 240 grit paper…
Image

I made sure the inside of the hole and the top of the hold where flat and smooth with no sharp edges or anything that would hinder the filling.
Image
Image

Also did the same with the scratch on the upper plastic…
Image

Then, using some of this…
Image

I filled, waited for it to be dry and sanded the surface super flat using a variety of wet and dry sandpapers until the surface was ultra smooth. No pics of the process as its quick work with the filler as drys very quick. But the finished result is great…

Other side done…
Image

Ready for its first plastic primer coat…

Painted the control panel surround last night. Nice and shiney. Just needs to be polished once its dried hard.
