Server migration

Post by cools »

Our host for the past few years is closing the service down, so in the coming weeks I'll be migrating everything to a new host.

The new service is more capable, so I'll take the opportunity to upgrade some of our software stack as well with the aim of making things even quicker.

No-one should notice much other than a brief outage when I perform the final steps and switch our DNS entries. This is just an advance warning, once I have a more accurate date I'll update.

Thanks for keeping it going. Do you/Pang take donations for server costs etc?

Nah, the server is only 12 quid a month.

Lots of invaluable tinkering behind the scenes by cools though. I do **** all.

Is there anyway we could get some of the new fancy forum features such as "post reacting" added at the same time.

I would rescind admin before adding such guff. The friction of having to hit reply to react is worthwhile IMO. Everywhere where reactions are a single click away they just clutter up the place and devalue their intended purpose. They serve a purpose in 1 to 1 chats, but rapidly lose value with more participants. However if someone would like to give an explanation of the value such things might add to a large forum, I'm all ears.

I'm ready to go on this, I just need some assistance for the wiki skin artwork.

Mediawiki has a fresh skin that supports SVG artwork properly, but for it to work well it needs a separate icon as well as wordmark: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgLogos

Our normal logo seems to work well as a wordmark, but I've got nothing bar the awe face as an icon... I don't like it.

Uploaded the logo here if anyone wants to play about with it.
