MS8 chassis MS9 tube.

Post by AeroCityMayor »

Hi y'all,

I got a cab for nowt, but the MS8 had terrible screen burn. There's a prize if you can name the game - I must concede, I'm stumped   :awe:

Image

I bought an MS9 tube from Mo for £40 with minimal burn with the intention of swapping out the tubes, and if it didn't work, then I could either sell the MS9 tube, or buy an MS9 chassis.

So it's out with the old

and discharge the monitor

and in with the new

Image

Not the most impressive result, but to be honest, I expected worse.

After a chat with Craig @ giz10p.co.uk on mIRC, I turned down the LOPT which got rid of the retrace lines, and had a play about until I found the pincushion adjustment. I also connected up a game with a crosshatch.

Et voila!!

Image

Still a little out on the trapezoid adjustment, and although noticeable ingame

Image

it's certainly preferable to the horrendous burn that I started out with.

Props to Richy for the cab, and to Craig @ giz10p.co.uk for continuing to patiently put up with my irritating n00b questions.

I'm going to say RESULT!!! as I'm about 85% happy with the outcome.

Cheers y'all,

a_m.

i've had to do similar in the past, as has Craig, we both had differing results, where I had hardly any adjustments to make on the chassis pots, Craig had some serious width issues IIRC

Wei Ya chassis works on both MS8 and MS9 tubes

incidentally, I noticed an influx of recent cabinets that appeared to have had monitors swapped out, "New Astro City" with an MS8 and various Astro 1st gens with MS9's. how else can anyone explain an older cab having a newer monitor and a newer cab having an older monitor installed.

btw, Ralph, I have an MS9 tube down here if you want it, some burn but not as bad as the one you show above, I have a few Sega monitor frames kicking around too

edit: I know of someone who may be willing to part with one of his spare MS9 chassis too

If a cabinet ran Legend of Success Joe for that long, it would probably be in pretty good shape from going unplayed for so many years.

Could someone please post more explicit instructions on doing a chassis swap. There used to be one on killer cabs and I didn't save it. I'm going to be swapping my MS8 out for a Wei Ya tri-sync and I have no idea what I'm doing and I don't want to kill myself. Thanks to anyone that can guide me through this.

Craig / Ordyne commented on this. AFAIK the Wei-ya chassis he sells are modified (by Craig) to fix this issue.

No idea how he does it though, but it’s the same with all MS8 monitors.

i swapped out a ms8-29fan with a rodotron 666a chassis and had no issues
maybe the wei ya has less range on the vertical or horizontal deflection

i know that a 26" nanao is even more obscure :?
