Egret 3 monitor swap
Greetings!
I've been the semi proud owner of this Egret 3 now for a couple of years now.
I say semi because it's the cheap chinese edition with the LG Monitor and the wei-ya chassis/power supply -.-
I've recently got my hands on a Toshiba monitor that came with a Sanwa KW0606A chassis. I'm now trying to figure out what exacly i have to change to get the Toshiba up and running and then how to integrate into the cab itself. So I would have a couple of questions:
This is what's in the cab now:
As far as i understand the stepdown converter (i'm in Switzerland) feeds into the grey cable here on the top right of the wood. The grey cable goes to a fuse, after that it goes to the powerbrick which powers the jamma connector/pcb board... and also to a socket & plug which goes to the Wei-ya chassis
My noob questions are:
1. Can i build some wiring and use the existing Wei-ya PSU?
I'm guessing this is the power intake on the Sanwa chassis?
2. If not how do I power the Monitor/Chassis?
3. Do i have to connect anything else to the chassis?
- My very limited understanding is that the monitor needs input from a pcb (in my case a MiSTer) and a Power intake. That's it right?
I know i could input a 31khz signal (from a MiSTer over the vga input) here: and the controlls would function over a existing ps360+ (that's in the cab already) going to the MiSTer.
But how would i get a 15khz in there? With the controls going over the Jamma harness using this https://www.antoniovillena.es/store/pro ... a-adapter/
?
Also would it make a difference since the input is coming from a MiSTer?
4. The Sanwa has a controlboard attached, which has limited options. Can i get something like this, to get more options? (Or can i even use this board with a different cable)
I feel like i'm not understanding a couple of crucial points to get this right.
Any help would be unbelievably appreciated!!!!
Thanks a bunch!

Re: Egret 3 monitor swap
Paging @radiantsvgun who might also be able to help. He's done this with the Toshiba monitor + chassis but I imagine it isn't much different.
1) I'm not sure which connector on the chassis is for power, but yeah that is probably correct. It should be a 3 pin as well (hot, neutral, gnd/earth); there only seems to be 2 pins populated on the Sanwa chassis but that shouldn't be a problem. You can either adapt the wiring by purchasing the correct connector, or you could also hard-wire a power cord to the solder side and use that instead.
2) See above.
3) VGA cable for 31K video. You may also want to figure out how it gets 15K - perhaps it can get it from the DE-15 port as well? Just set your MiSTer to do 15K over the DE-15 port and test it If it works, you can probably wire up a fingerboard or something to breakout RGBS and then connect it to the DE-15 cable in the cabinet. You can also set the MiSTer to just output 640x480 which should also work fine. I am pretty sure you're supposed to put 15K video into the AMP (or whatever it is) connector below the DE-15 port in the picture you took, but I am also pretty sure you can just shove RGBS through the DE-15 port.
4) I don't think the Toshiba remote will work with the Sanwa, but I could be wrong.
Good luck!

Re: Egret 3 monitor swap
Thanks so much for the reply!
I've finished the power cable this morning and powered the monitor up, with the MiSTer on vga and it works
Sadly it makes a really weird and scarry sound:

Also when black is displayed one sees some kind of interference:

Anyone have an idea whats going on here?

Re: Egret 3 monitor swap
Yeah, do the power cable to the service outlet and use the vga port for rgb.
That problem you have sounds like flyback, and the interference is possibly cap related. I had a toshiba with similar issues and a recap, cleaning and reflow solved the issues.
The hardest part of the swap is getting the tube out, I laid the cabinet on its back and carefully removed the monitor.

Thanks for that! I'll see about getting a new flyback and recapping:)

Re: Egret 3 monitor swap
Yeah that whining definitely sounds like the flyback. I'd follow radiant's advice and see how it goes.
I think I spotted the classic Yaton sticker on the bracket, did you buy this from him? How did the order/delivery process go?

Re: Egret 3 monitor swap
Yup, it's from him. He said it would take up to three months... I took nearly double that, but it arrived in one piece. Just a bit unhappy that the chassis isn't working flawless. I also think someone had a go on the neckboard.
He's really friendly though, and he always replies to messages. After about 4 months he said he could refund me and once i do get it, i could repay. I have to admit i wasn't extremely comfortable ordering with him, it's not like a ebay or similar. But he came through... I would order again. But i guess just expect it not to be perfect

Yeah, sounds about par for the course with Yaton. It''ll show up, he comes through, but what you get is a bit of a crapshoot.
I'd consider cleaning the neckboard and reflowing those joints. Yeesh.
Let us know how everything goes!

Re: Egret 3 monitor swap
So i just desoldered the neckboard and realized that one pin of the flyback connectoin wasn't soldered to the board at all... Is this what might have caused the sound?

Re: Egret 3 monitor swap
The neck connector has been replaced. Whoever replaced it just did a poor job of it.
The pin that has been tucked under isn't normally used and there isn't a place for it on the neck board.

Re: Egret 3 monitor swap
Greetings!
Thought id give you guys a update So Great news: I finally swapped the tube
I've been messing around with the Egret 3 and LG then the Toshiba tube and 3 different chassis for about 4 years... 8 months of that was waiting for the display to come from Yaton in China -.- (never doing that again)
Some was waiting for repairs to the Chassis's (done by Edmondo in Spain) and some time spent giving up, repeatedly.
The last "giving up" happened a month ago when I got a new Sanwa KW0606A from Japan, the waiting MiSTer was setup, and having everything connected I powered up (super nervously) and lost a couple of years of life due to disappointment and stress when I got a horizontal collapse. Giving up, I connected the LG again and tried to play Donpachi telling myself I can hardly see the background stretching and warping (due to the horrible geometry). Went to bed frustrated and googled for some time, trying to find a solution... all the while with a sense of dread that it will never work out. That I should be content with the bad geometry and just try and enjoy the game. So I decided to give up and put the tube and 2 Chassis up for sale.
The next morning I was walking my dog and thought I should just try again because you never know. Getting home I connect the Toshiba and Sanwa... and... boom... collapse.
I turn everything off, trip on something, by accident hit the power button that switches everything on again... and then... no collapse... just a somewhat blurry image. IT **** WORKS!!!!!
I message Edmondo trying to get a explanation for what the hell is going on. But he sadly deletes all his messages after a week or so, and i didn't want to waste more of his time, or jinx the now working setup.
It's a understatement to say I was overjoyed!
The Toshiba tube I got from Yaton is sort of better than the LG Phillips that was in the Egret 3.... Although Yaton said no burn there is some on the bottom left, but you hardly see it.
Sadly the convergence is horribly off but only in the lower half of the Display... but the geometry is a world apart from the LG so i can live with the bad convergence/slightly **** focus around the edges/bottom half of the screen. So I nonetheless extremely happy!
And all of this happened just in time to have the cab running on my 40th birthday Seeing family and lifetime friends and their kids playing some Street fighter, Puzzle bobble next to Ms. Pac-man, Gun Smoke and Donpachi was brilliant. People where really into it.
Sadly, yesterday evening, I sat down to start learning the patterns to Donpachi and... after a moment... A HORIZONTAL COLLAPSE appeared followed by a somewhat fishy smell -.-
Powered of, took the chassis out and the only thing my laymen's eye can see that could possibly be wrong is this: I'm gutted, I though this horror trip was finally over and... well...
Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in.
Any idea, what caused this? Or if this is the problem? Edmondo at one point said it could also be a broken yoke on the tube... any help would be appreciated
At times like these I wish i'd gone for collecting stamps -.-
