Sega Astro City compatible Tubes
Hi guys,
man the worst thing just happened. Guy picked up a Astro City from me and we removed the CRT because I'm in the 3rd floor. While lifting the CRT in his car he somehow managed to break the tube neck and he is of course devastated.
Only thing I can do for him is ask for help. What tubes could he possibly look into? Any consumer CRT's that might fit?
Best regards
Olli

So I know this say 28 inch and probably there will be problems with the curvature, but from the measurings it's the same tube size as my other astro. Any ideas?

Ideally he'll want a Nanao MS8-29 or MS9-29 with a Toshiba A68KJU96X tube.

Yeah that would be the perfect swap but let's be honest...it's easier to buy a cabinet with that monitor than finding the monitor alone.

Also compatible with Hitachi A68KSA30X tube with chassis Nanao MS9. This combo can be found in several Sega Racecabs.

Re: Sega Astro City compatible Tubes
The Thomson 28DG17E TV is compatible, but there may be a little light on the bezel. There are also Sony in 29" but their chassis are large.
Otherwise 28"/29" TVs from 80's/90's with the black shell often have the right curve.

11 years later @uncletoms writeup is still one of the best.
Also, since you're in Germany, this post has really good info on what consumer sets you want to look for:

Just concentrate on the tubes. They should work.

MS8 / MS9-29 and MS2932 use the same tube.

Re: Sega Astro City compatible Tubes
Sorry if I hijack this thread for a moment, but does that mean I could swap the chassis on my Naomi Universal and make it work with JAMMA games?
Thanks

Re: Sega Astro City compatible Tubes
No, you have to swap the yoke too if you want to install a MS9 chassis. Tube is the same, yoke isn't.

Re: Sega Astro City compatible Tubes
Thanks nem. Is there a compatibility list of CRTs that details which ones work for various arcade chassis&yokes or how would I go about finding one for a particular chassis&yoke?

Re: Sega Astro City compatible Tubes
Oops, seems I've missed out on several old messages up there at the bell icon, sorry for that. It scrolls down, only the top 5 are visible!?
Anyway the CRT you should look for, for best performance and color, are most Japanese made tubes, saving your original yokes (!). It seems that Toshiba was the one and only 29" CRT manufacturer for Nanao at the time, they also used these CRTs in their Bazooka series consumer televisions, along with the particular speaker system as in SEGA's driver-cabinets, so if you see an old 29" Bazooka TV then you should buy it.
Ofcourse several 28 and 29 inch CRTs will work, but comparing the EU-made tube with the Japanese Toshiba shows a great difference in intensity dynamics and color purity, probably due to phosphor quality. Using the correct yoke ofcourse will then provide you with the best possible picture.
Sadly I have never seen a Toshiba, or any other japanese brand, CRT TV in my local recycling. And from what I remember in my last visit to a shop selling Toshiba TVs, surely 20 years ago, they used Thomson CRT (France), which made me return the TV the same day.
Best would be to live in Japan, having access to a nearby recycling fascility, preferably also working there, to collect any old Toshiba TV, even the smaller ones of 20".
