had the following happen to me tonight while playing Final Fight.
after like 45min of runtime the monitor went dark with a "swirring" sound and some burnt smell.
I immediately turned off the cab and waited like 10 minutes expecting that the monitor has gone..
it started normalley though with the monitor showing everything properly!
my question now - what could have happened?!
did something scorch within the monitor chassis? is it even safe to use it now?
guess I will need to check on the chassis....
PS: using a 300w converter - maybe the culprit?

Your stepdown doesn't have anything to do with it.
Inspect the chassis and look for obvious damage. Usually if something burns it will noticeable charred.

take a close look at power section just near the 3 big nichicom filters cap you will find 3 big resistor and a zener diode in this area there are about five little caps check for leacking or burn damage. Then replace all little caps (five) in the power section.
VERY important: use a good step down transformer this chassis do not Like 120v AC, you just must supply 100-110V AC Max.
