Astro city “washed out” picture
I got myself a (old) Astro City 6 months ago and thought the picture wasn’t perfect enough. It’s almost like playing a console game in composite and not rgb.
I just came home from japan and looked at a lot of arcade there and confirmed that my monitor is a little bit “blurry”.
The previous owner had replaced the capacitors (made by a professional he claimed) and I played around with the brightness and focus settings but it made no difference.
What could be the problem?
I’m not an expert when it comes to fixing arcade machines but I understand a bit.
Thanks in advance

Re: Astro city “washed out” picture
is it ms9-29 or ms8-29, do you have some photos of screen shots
this could be down to adjustments(certainly if ms8), could be a weak tube or could be something at fault on the chassis

Re: Astro city “washed out” picture
My monitor is a Ms9-29s.
The thing is that if i almost all games are washed out but games like samurai showdown 5 is a lot more sharper but the resolution is off. I will post 2 pictures of SS4 (washed out) and SS5 (sharp) as soon as posible.

Re: Astro city “washed out” picture
Thanks for the link, as far as I see it the link refers to help with color and brightness settings.
Maby I used a wrong term by saying “washed out”.
My problem is that my monitor isn’t sharp enough. It’s to “blurry” in comparison with the arcade monitors I saw in Japan.

Re: Astro city “washed out” picture
looking at your pics I would say in some the black level/cut offs are too high or contrast too low

Would this be something that either of the 2 pots on the flyback can resolve @grantspain? Looks like it might...

Re: Astro city “washed out” picture
Fixed an Outrun that had similar recently.
On the back of the chassis look for a box with 2 pots / knobs labelled 'screen' and 'focus'. Turn the screen up very slightly.
Might need someone to help, or a big mirror to see the results while you tweak.

Re: Astro city “washed out” picture
Thanks for the posts.
I have tryed these 2 pots before but sadly without any “good” resoults.
The screen pot is basically just adjusting the “brightness” and the focus is not helping with the sharpness for me, it only makes it worse or the same.
This is a tricky problem.
