Advice needed on building discharge tool

Post by supertakumar »

I need to discharge several of my cabs so i can remove the chassis for service.

I'm building a tool as per the instructions on the wiki.

Chatting with Devil Soundwave and he advised a cheap screwdriver as being best so as to avoid any chrome coating etc.

And some wire along the lines of extension cable wire.

I got a poundland screwdriver, and chopped some wire from an old extension cable.

Will these guys do the trick for making the tool? Is the screwdriver long/thick enough?

Bit nervous about doing this so any advice is very much appreciated.

Looks good to me. I stripped the wire, wound it round the shaft :fastlove: then taped it

On the other end I stripped plenty of wire, enough to wind round the frame a few times.

I was really nervous too, but once you do it the first time you'll never worry again.

You might want to scrape that paint off the screwdriver if it's to stop it being conductive

I just stripped one end of a **** old jump lead, wound that round the circumference of my shaft a few times, taped it, then clamped the crocodile clip on the opposite end to my frame :fastlove:

Ah yeah i thought about using a jump lead, but i was a bit scared of knocking the clip off so went for a windy version.

Here's what i put together, do you guys think it looks safe to use?

Haha, anticlimatic suits me just fine!

I use Tommy Walsh Poundland stuff all the time, first time i've trusted my life to his stuff.

If the pics will help others that's great :)

Thank you man

This.

Most monitors will have bleeder circuits. The only Nanao monitor that will make a pop is the MS8 (and older I guess).

Still, there's always the possibility that the bleeder circuit is malfunctioning, so better safe than sorry!

Cool, i was worried about that surprising me!

I removed the entire monitor first as it was tricky to get in via the back. Is that ok?

Also, about to try discharging, where would the best place be to attach the wire end? Would it be the metal cage or the grey metal monitor surround?

Personally I use the ground from the mains, attach the crocodile clip there and discharge the tube. Of course you need to be sure that the ground is connected at your power wall sockets and it's not there for decoration :D

You need a THIN single wire to discharge. That thick cable is the worst possible choice.

Ok thanks man. Can change that.

I have lots of different types of cables/wire.

Which kind is best?

Care to elaborate why? What's an acceptable gauge and resistance range to discharge a monitor?

I just spoke to grantspain (i'm taking the chassis to him on Sunday)

He said thinner wire is better otherwise it's possible for charge to be retained in the wire if it's too thick. Makes sense.

He advised i just use one of the wires so i removed the blue and white ones, i'm just using the brown now.

He also said that the best place to put the wire end is on the earth braid.

He said it looks good to go, so gonna give it a try.

Here's what i ended up with in the end

Also, for anyone who isn't sure, this is the earth braid

Nice work, best just get a crocodile clip to attach and reattach to the braid.
