Re: MS9 weird behavior
I went today to the shop to buy some caps, but it was impossible to get the exact match... I ended up buying online, still had to buy in different shops, and many of them, where only sold in 10s or 20s, I ended up spending 100e in caps and other connectors...

Re: MS9 weird behavior
That's crazy. Big distributors like Farnell and RS-components have everything and no minimum quantities.

Re: MS9 weird behavior
I don't know why, I ended up buying couple of kits of course in case I screw some soldering, and the big 1000uf 200v is already 4 or 5e a piece, maybe I should have left that one alone. Besides I tried to be as loyal as possible to what the chassis had and RS didn't have some caps, like the bipolar one so had to use two webs with double shipping costs...

Re: MS9 weird behavior
Today the first caps arrives and started the process, but half way I just realized my cap was to close to another component, I checked for continuity and there is but not sure if they are supposed to be connected or just the blob is too big. I tried removing cant see clearly, and don´t want to risk it.
This is the pic, the positive C956 and the J526:
Can anyone confirm me if this is normal or I messed up the chassis?

Re: MS9 weird behavior
looks ok, as long as you got the cap polarities correct

Thanks Grant, I meant there is continuity between the cap and J526, that worried me.grantspain wrote:looks ok, as long as you got the cap polarities correct

Re: MS9 weird behavior
WEll, I have finished my first recap. Mixed feelings. I plugged it all in, and turned on the cab, and the monitor turnes on!! But completely unsynchronized, and after 10 or 15 seconds it shut down. Now when I turn it on, it clicks and can see a small light in the screen but nothing stable, see vid:
Any ideas why could this be happening?

Re: MS9 weird behavior
post a good photo of the chassis so I can see all your cap polarities-both solder and component side

Re: MS9 weird behavior
everything looks ok,
you can see the leakage from your old caps all over the chassis- clean that away with cotton buds and contact cleaner
I expect you have one or more ic failures

Re: MS9 weird behavior
Thanks so much Grant. Anything I can do about it? That really sucks, it was working fine before the cap replacement.grantspain wrote:everything looks ok,

Re: MS9 weird behavior
that is odd that it was working before, there should be no reason for failure now unless you bridged a track or damaged a track during the cap replacement

Re: MS9 weird behavior
Ok, this might help, at first it turned on randomly, until it stopped turning on, I was afraid of recapping so I took it out for cleaning and taking some pic, when I plugged it back I saw a spark coming from the chasis in this area:grantspain wrote:that is odd that it was working before, there should be no reason for failure now unless you bridged a track or damaged a track during the cap replacement
Regarding t501 everything seems ok, besides the solder job which could be better. I have tested continuity in the paths around and everything seems to have continuity in its path.
Thanks again Grant for the help!
One last thing, that big black cap I didn't bother replacing it, because it looked ok...

Re: MS9 weird behavior
the two primary pins of t501 need resoldering
the big cap(mains filter) very rarely fail
check fuse holder is not broken or bent

I soldered t501 again
Attempted to plug it on again and it was same as the first time I plugged it after recap. I don't know if I am right, but the buzzing is higher than before it stopped working:
