Strong burning smell coming from tube!

Post by Hellrun » April 4th, 2013, 12:30 pm

I purchased an untested tube to replace my necked Samsung 29" in my AWSD. When I dropped it in and fired it up quite immediately there was a strong burning smell coming from what seemed to be the tube so I switched it off. After some reading around I thought that possibly this was actually because of the flyback transformer, so it might actually be the chassis. This morning I received a brand new Rodotron 666A 29 PDF from Craig and after connecting everything up if seems that I got the exact same problem.

The tube seems to get a white light, like a small dot in the center of the screen for about 1 second then it disappears and the burning smell starts. Is this a none runner? I'm having a total nightmare with this cabinet, have lost my faith in this altogether really. Would be useful if anyone could shed some light on this?

Cheers

UPDATE, just tried this again and this time I kept the chassis switched off until I heard the music coming from the pcb (Captain Commando). When I switched it on instead of a small dot, I got a thin line (about 5 mil) running horizontally across the entire screen. This seemed promising though because I could see the colours of the game, since there is no degauss switch for this chassis (its auto when you switch it on I think) I decided to switch the chassis off for 30 seconds and then power it back on. This time I got the same line running horizontally but it was flickering like it was trying to display the entire screen, I would see a few inches vertically for a few seconds then it went back to a line. This all came to an end when I heard the tube 'click' off and then it started smelling badly of burning and when I looked down I could see smoke rising from what looked to be around the neckboard area. Needless to say I switched it off. :(

Could you get some pics of the tube and chassis? Is the tube definitely a match for the chassis? Yoke coil plugged in? Remote board plugged in?

Sorry for the links but the dimensions were too big to img and wouldve taken a while to resize.

The chassis pictured is a Rodotron 666A-29PDF and should be a replacement for the Wei-Ya M3129D dual focus chassis. Which is the chassis that was already inside. The tube has the same model number as the one that is lying in my garden (necked :( ) These are pictured at the bottom

Is the yoke coil definitely connected properly? The problem you are describing sounds deflection related. It's very hard to tell from the pic but it looks like its running to an adapter.

there was a similar problem like thos recently as well with the dot and hori line worth a look through the rest of the mon q&a maybe might be something there

similar to this http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=23311

think there was another one

As far as I can tell, yes. The other tube has exactly the same 'adapter' on it. The pins are connected to the adapter and shrink wrapped around it. They must've done this for all these tubes I'm assuming it has the wrong type of connector for the chassis originally from the factory. The odd thing is, on the other side of the connector, the yellow and green cables are swapped over. But I checked my old tube and this was exactly the same.

I'm sitting here wondering, should I remove the yoke from my old tube? Could it come in useful incase there is a problem with the yoke on this? I haven't had much exposure to CRTs so I'm not even sure how to do this or if its any use?

EDIT: Decided to remove the old yoke so have that to hand now if required

Tried again, different problem now. I hope the chassis isn't dead it was brand new this morning! :eh:

Ive had the line once, replaced the chassis and it worked.
I also got that clicking sound once and after that I never got that chassis to work again. (Didnt bother to look for the faulty component though)

I also removed the original yoke connector and soldered in the one that comes with the chassis. (To get rid of that adapter thingy.)

Where does the tube come from? If it's from a TV the yoke should have absolutely false readings and kills every arcade-chassis. You should get your hands on a multimeter and read the yoke of the tube. You need resistance and inductance! Inductance is the more important thing.

Best thing to (in case the tube comes from a TV) is to swap the whole yoke.

Well that doesn't sound good, looks like that chassis is probably dead. Not getting very good luck with this.

The yoke is the original that comes on the Samsung tube found in the AWSD. My old tube was exactly the same so I've took the yoke off that in case I need it.

Then it's likely it has killed the chassis before you swapped the yoke...:(

Yeh I think the chassis might be dead, haven't swapped the yoke yet but might give it a go.

Ok, I just swapped the yoke out for the one from my old tube and I also swapped back to the wei-ya chassis, it is doing the exact same thing with the clicking/no display. I am not seeing any glow coming from the back of the tube near the neckboard

Could this just be the electron gun or parts there of are faulty?

the original yoke was probably to blame for killing the chassis, its either blown the horizontal output stage or the vertical deflection circuit-both will cause chassis to click

look for any burnt resistors on the original yoke as that will give you a clue where the problem lies

If you thought the burning smell was from the CRT the only culprit on the CRT would be the scan coil. If the windings had shorted it would also suggest why you had a dot in the middle of the screen as you wouldn't have any deflection. The 3129 and the 666 with both be damaged if the deflection coil isn't plugged in and obviously if you have a short in it. The fact it powered up again in frame collapse is odd but could suggest the horizontal winding was shoring and eventually burnt open. When scan coils fail it's pot luck as to what will happen but it usually ends up in a damaged chassis.

You have two chassis smelling of burning when powered up and the 666 would have been tested before dispatch so its safe to say you have a bad crt or scan coil.

Well that's not ideal. Any ideas how I can narrow this down? as this cabinet will be going on the bonfire at this rate. I have removed the yoke and it does look a bit iffy but I will have to get a multimeter out and see if any of these components are damaged. So there is also the possibility that the tube could be at fault? If so is the anything I can test for this? Also for the chassis' what should I be l looking for on these to confirm they are now defunct?

Thanks all btw, I appreciate your help

The two chassis are damaged for sure, there is no doubt about that. You can test the coil but only with an inductance meter, a standard meter will not tell you anything on a coil of that spec.

Regarding testing the crt, you need a crt rejuvenator to test it and the specs of the CRT, the latter may be hard to find. Either that or you test it with a known good scan coil. My bet is on the coil and not the tube.
