Wait, these specific parts being dead… does this mean I did, or did not do something wrong to cause the collapse??

You did nothing wrong buddy. No. My prognosis is that the diode failed due to heat as there was no thermal paste left between it and the heatsink. That in turn allowed current to travel back and fry the horizontal output transistor. Its impossible to damage it via the input board. The input board would give way first.

@Monstermug … no pressure, but I recently picked up a NOS GunCon2, and just this minute purchased a sealed PS2 copy of Virtua Cop Elite Edition… all because it will be a dream to play some old school light gun stuff on a 27 inch screen…

Now tell me I don’t have faith in you! :P

Still dead… however, the mighty @Monstermug remains double optimistic…

I’ve told him that if he can fix it, I’ll have the worlds smallest meet-up (3 cabs and a supergun :lolno: ), and as many local peeps as fancy it can come and play some games on it…

We’ll see!

Just for clarity, the Horizontal collapse was fixed.

After

There is now horizontal deflection, albeit a bit all over the place. You can faintly make out the menu screen on his megadrive.

However, it looks like there is another fault with it. At first, I thought it may be some horizontal width control but after speaking with Grant it looks like it may be a sync issue.

I need to pop by to check if all the settings are correct. and that we didn't dislodge anything and that the signals going in is actually correct before we progress any further. Failing that I may need to take that input board with me after all and see if the sync issue is lost somewhere there.

The saga continues...
