BTW - got my breadboards today so testing can recommence. I can also enjoy a nice sandwich later.

Hit a snag. An arcade button signal line is high. When you push the button, it is shorted to ground, completeing the circuit.

Because of the way the Emphatic/Yosai circuit is designed, it sits on the negative line so when you press the button the signal shorts to ground through the oscillator circuit and thus gives the autofire.

By making the minor change of placement over to the Jamma edge, I am left with having to manipulate the button signal lines themselves because it is common ground and obviously this can't be manipulated for individual signals in this way (plus it doesn't work anyway).

I have managed to achieve an autofire, but annoyingly it is always on UNTIL I press the action button which turns it off! i.e inversed.

I've studied the datasheet a great deal and tried three different set ups now and no joy, so I think I will have to find an alternative IC...

Grrrr.

Slight revision. Both caps are now 100μ this has sped up the autofire rate a fair bit.

Pic with a ¥100 for size comparison. :geek:

The circuit is pretty messy because;

1. My eyesight is bad
2. I don't have the correct tools
3. It took 10 minutes to build

The Japanese "button only" autofire circuit has now been mapped out, and it's quite a genius bit of electronics wizardry.

"We" now know how it works (although I don't remember the exact method it's to do with the delay of the signal passing through the IC and charging/discharging the capacitor - there's no oscillator), but it's a total mystery how power is getting in to the chip.

It shouldn't work, but it does. Now wondering if it'd work with an SMT IC instead... It might not.

Not sure on that one man - it likely draws 5v. If you mean the circuit Emphatic/Yosay have, that particular IC doesn't *need* power, it just works faster with it. The IC is the oscillator essentially.

Also if a circuit works with one package type there is no reason it shouldn't work with an smt chip...

Which japanese circuit you referring to? I got a hold of a Japanese one (not the same as the one you sent me pics of), but as usual some of the parts and stuff are not readily available so all I managed to eke from it was a good dual layer pcb layout idea for a small form factor.

My current design uses 3 ICs, all different and not the one on the Yosai circuit - I abandoned that.

Yosais. Pin 14 is the supply for the chip, but we've got a ground then a cap going into it...

Well whilst the standard operating range of Vcc (pin 14) is 2 - 6v, the maximum ratings state it can handle a range across -0.5 - 7v.

It also states on the dsheet that the input voltage can be 0 to Vcc.

If anybody could craft me one of these I'd love to purchase one. While I understand what the GND wire is, being supergun scum I'm not even sure how I'd fit this into my stick in terms of connecting to the harness.

My wrist is really hurting thanks to Aero Fighters!

That would be great Yosai.

I'll give you a fair few days to dig them out, and then fire you a PM.

Thanks chaps.

I would like to build such an auto fire circuit myself. but I do not know which 74hc04 is the right one. There are many different ones like for example SN74HC04N, 74HCU04 or M74HC04B
Could someone send me a link where i can find the right one ?
Thanks in advance.

The ones i used were 74HC04AP IIRC. I'll check in the box of bits later, there is probably a spare.
