Re: The current scene for a returner
I miss the Pony I sold..
Speaking of Deathsmiles - played it without really knowing much about cave co having stumbled across the game in Casino arcade London a few years after it was released. I paid around £350 for a full kit with the skeleton, which was the most I had ever paid for an arcade game at the time and was scared to turn it on.
I think this is probably a sensible approach, buy something because you really enjoy it without an expectation that you will be able to get your money back - let alone make a profit.

Meh, what's the point? Of course stuff was cheaper back then. That also includes stock, housing and oil and all other gadgets you can think of.
I did score a minty home use only Pony 3 in 2019 for 500e including MVS mobo and four games. Worst cabinet I played on, but best picture I've ever seen. Sold it to Switzerland. Don't miss it at all.

Not a chance is general inflation any way in line with the price increase of a Pony III.aerobert wrote: ↑February 2nd, 2023, 2:39 pm

Jaleco Pony III in 2009 - 650 euro
Jaleco Pony III in 2023 - 5000 euro or thereabouts the last time I looked.
That's almost X8 the price. So unless house prices where you live have increased 8 times the price in 14 years then there's something else going on.
As an aside, did you never play any vertical shmups in your Pony? That's what that cabinet is primarily for IMO, wouldn't dream of using one for MVS.

Re: The current scene for a returner
Nope. Wouldn't dare rotating in that tight encasement. The ergonomics were horrible for me. Sloping control panel I never managed to rest my wrists on comfortably, very flat angle on tube caused strain on my neck and back. Too bad, because I loved the looks and size of it.

Re: The current scene for a returner
8K in Spain (not in very good shape) and pre pandemic.
In fact, If I remember correctly I think that I offered 5K (MP) lots of years ago to buy one. Maybe it is because there are just a ¿handful? of Pony 3 in Spain. As I said, It would not be hard to sell one for way more. The bad thing is that it would be very unlikely to buy it again.
So now you know, sell your Pony 3 to us! but I do not think there are that much ponis in Europe either.

Re: The current scene for a returner
On the other hand as a player it's been a great time. The state of emulation has never been better. I have a cheapass budget phone that runs dreamcast games beautifully. Mame / retroarch run games fabulously. You can get a mister, a pi. In a lot of cases you could put one in a cabinet, close the door and noone would be able to tell the difference between an original board and whatever you're running. Ultimately i'm a player and not a collector. So yeah while i do get annoyed with the state of things sometimes, and i do prefer original hardware, ultimately i can play whatever i want for pennies.
That doesn't solve the hardware (cab) problem, but for games it's really great.

Re: The current scene for a returner
They were Mk2 28s.
Went to HoG where no one used them, then eventually they were sold to individual buyers. I know that Hitesh here bought four and later sold two to Virtvic. They were all very fixy-uppy to say the least. Brilliant all round cabs though.

[edit]arcnl, absolutely! Great time to play these creaky old games. Loads of options now. Even if you don't want to spend about £1200 on an Astro, Decent CRTs are still about - or very nice LCD solutions. And let's not forget you can always get a good woody pretty cheap

Re: The current scene for a returner
I played on those MK2 28s in the Troc any time I was in London, one had Raiden 2 in it which eventually is what lead to me buying a MK III 25 and sticking a Raiden 2 PCB in it too. Such a lovely combo of machine / PCB.

5? 7? lol gimme a break, that’s just hot air. I had mine listed here at AO for 3500 (or thereabouts) as late as 2021 and there was very little interest, eventually it was sold to Switzerland after a lot of pussyfooting pm’s.

geotrig wrote: ↑February 2nd, 2023, 8:12 amI'd agree with this 100% we are our own worst enemys normalising oddball pricing and it has turned the hobby to **** ....its partially why I hate valuation threads or sub section (vac) for example as it for me its normalising odd prices and it feels like everytime ** pcb goes for sale prices seem to go up that bit or odd pricing is quoted as normal ,ebay pricing is on par with forum pricing nearly now !! I sold many a game in the past for less* than I payed but that it seems is a totally foreign concept to take a hit anymore,(not saying we need to or should but prices on the market fluctuated up/down more before)
It's sad, but there's no point in giving out good deals, unless done privately. People have zero respect for getting a deal.
There's a really good example of this on Arcade-Projects right now. A Canadian guy bought a DSMBL kit for 3800 USD from a seller on Shmups three months ago. It was local pick up. Unfortunately, he ran into money problems, so he decided sell the game. He looked up prices for it and noticed there'd been a 6k offer for one in a WTB post on here. So he put it on the Arcade-Projects FS forum
for 6300 USD

I guess it's also stories like these, true or not, that draw people into areas like this, even though they have no interest in the subject.nem wrote: ↑February 4th, 2023, 1:48 pm There's a really good example of this on Arcade-Projects right now. Re: The current scene for a returner
$2500 is alot of money to most people, the prospect to make that much quickly and easily completely legit doesnt make you a bad person or any less of a collector/player...

Remember we are living in a time when Atari Jaguar & games are fetching big money when only a few years ago they were selling cheap.
