Vewlix Nesica Card Reader, useful? Replacement/ modification ideas?

Post by wonderbanana »

I’ve got a Vewlix F (currently running a mutigame TTX3) and it has a Nesica card reader. Is this actually useful for anything? I’ve got Nesica games on the TTX but I can’t see it does anything useful?

Ideally I’d get rid of it and use the space for something else? Has anyone else done this? What mods have you done?

I kept mines from an aesthetics perspective, but seen lots of people replace the panel with volume controls, USB ports, wireless phone chargers etc.

More common to replace the larger panel to the left of the card reader with a subpanel of buttons or similar (I've got this for adding extra buttons for credits, console home buttons etc.)

@mrfrosty, where did you get your sub panel from? Looks great.
Astro City is only a letter away from atrocity. Makes you think doesn’t it?

@mrfrosty What do you/others use the USB ports for?

I’ve got a pair of Sinden guns plugged into them - means I can just quickly disconnect them and pack away when not using

Rafael Tamanini makes them (you can contact him via the Taito Vewlix and Chewlix Owners group on Facebook) - sure it was $100 including shipping from Brazil

The buttons are metallic 24mm Sanwas and the volume knob, USB ports etc were just cheap ones off Amazon

Thanks for the replies. So I'm guessing it won't affect the running of my X3 to disconnect it.

My sub panel from Raph is just being despatched but I was thinking of making the card reader into a wireless phone charger.

Cheers! That's a legitimate use for them I can see. I've been trying to think of other uses to see if they're worth putting into some panels I'm designing but TBH I can't think of anything useful.

I can't really see the use of having them for extra control pads and I wouldn't want to use them for PC management.

Is anyone using them for anything else?

They're all about as 'useful' as anything else I can think of

Fwiw I know you've said no PC management, but I got properly fed up opening up my Lindberghs to use a decent keyboard and mouse and everything wireless was completely useless inside the metal cab. A couple of easily accessible (hidden?) USBs would've been very useful.

It's only useful if you're running the 'original' muli. The first release TTX3 was set to 720p because of the stock F/C screen, and required a Fast I/O and (i think) card reader to play the games. If you're using a latter release, emulation has taken over and the reader is no longer required.

I made a batch of clones some time ago for wireless chargers.

Oh agreed, I'm not against having USBs for PC management, I just don't want to clutter the CP up with rarely used things. A couple of hidden accessible ports would be useful if you have your PC in your cab :thumbupright:

The two PCs for my cabs are external and accessible from my office desk so management isn't a problem.

Good stuff. That would mean having my cabs switched on long enough to charge my phone though :lolno:
