(Hotd). guns aren't working.

Post by Simonclarke »

Hi Everyone,

A utter newbie here. I've got a problem and only a slight hint of a solution. I'd appreciate a response from the awesome people who clearly are more knowledgeable here.

I've recently brought an original House of the dead (Hotd). The deluxe cabinet. Its all set up except the guns aren't working.

I'm getting a flash when firing on both guns but no bullets register. I've tried calibration but can't fire on screen. I've ordered a new gun sensor which I'm waiting for. That was a guess based on YouTube videos for similar issues. But, both guns seems fishy.

I've took one gun apart, wires seem OK. I've wiped lense but not removed if that's even possible. Seller claims somethings come loose but I'm not buying that.

Any suggestions folks?

Thanks

Deluxe? So it's the one with the rear projection screen?

Yes it's the rear projection screen, 45 plus inches.

Here is a post I wrote on cleaning up Sega Type II gun sensors. I had similar issues with mine when I got it.

So you think the flashing but no bullets is indeed the sensor? I know the models different yours is 2 but surely principles the same?

I believe the flash occurs when you complete the trigger pull.

type 1 guns are reliant on screen intensity to register so you can up the contrast, gains, brightness etc to see if that helps
the most common issue is on the sensor board and either the opto legs break or the choke legs break
the flash like mentioned is when the trigger is activated but no shot registered

I imagine the machine was disassembled for delivery so check the wiring connectors, one may have been missed or even damaged in shipping

Very critical question... is the gun protect board present? If not, get one, do not operate it without or you WILL fry something.

You don't need it for HotD1.

It's for the newer IR lightgun tech from Sega.

An update thanks to those who have helped so far, With brightness high, there's clear screen burn, blue gun fires centrally but not in any corners. Reds still dead.

I'm getting coloured lines on the sideways (vertical) red green and blue on screen after getting guns working. Any suggestions what's come loose or I've done?

The blue gun itself is okay (I'll explain why later). The red gun maybe has a disconnected wire inside the gun harness/hose. I would switch both gun hoses to see if the issue switches sides (better yet switch various gun parts). Had the bad tracking issue in a Lost World before and after switching various gun parts, I found the issue to be inside the gun hose.

House of the Dead 1 always used optical guns meaning good tracking mainly relies on good light emission from the monitor. These tubes are most likely worn meaning even if you fix the red gun, it will still not track in the corners. I don't know if my suggestion for finding replacement projector crts is a good suggestion at this point. The situation for those rear projector crts is pretty grim.

Thanks, I'll try switching the hoses once the monitor lines are sorted. As the lines have screwed up shooting with blue gun. Registering bullets etc just not screen damage. Any idea what I've knocked loose by messing around?

The card attached to the light on the CRT Screen was loose I've pushed it back up when colours come back but lines persist.

I'm trying to avoid taking everything out the back to put back in if I can help it.

You'll have to accept the fact that taking parts out of the cabinet is unavoidable for a deep repair situation. It's much more worth it in the long run.

I had a very similar issue recently with my HOTD. The screen needs to have very good convergence and purity for the guns to track properly.

In my case, I had to replace the tube (CRT not rear projection).
