Aero City Control Panel top layer peeling

Post by davewellington »

The top layer of my Aero City panel always had a tiny amount of peel around the screw holes, but recently a large section was lifted accidentally (we painted the back with anti-rust paint and it lifted with the masking tape removal).
I can see on the section that has lifted there is a little paint from the panel. I'm concerned that more might light if I strip it all off, but also there doesn't seem to be any way back from here. Has anyone had to deal with this problem before? If you did peel it, what did you replace it with?

Unless anyone has any advice against it, i'm going to peel the rest of the top layer off with help from the hairdryer this weekend. After that, I was planning to put on clear book cover seal (duraseal, as we call it in New Zealand). Not feeling super confident about this solution!

I suppose the risk with peeling it completely is that the art layer might lift in places too, especially at the cutaways.

You could cut off just the corner of the laminate that’s peeling with a scalpel or x-acto if you carefully cut behind where the peel starts using a ruler. That is if you can live with imperfection.

I think it’s reasonably safe to say you won’t get it back to a factory finish without a replacement cpo.

If the art layer gets destroyed you could get a custom skin made from the artwork vector.

Something like this, haven't tried or tested myself but I hear they're hard wearing.

I'd glue it back down and keep it clamped tight while it dries.

Use Rossyra's suggestion, and then use Duraseal on the exposed corners.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions so far. Haven't pulled the trigger yet. Still feel convinced that I could get it off without taking the paint. Duraseal probably wouldn't be the best solution for resealing, I'd try to find something else a bit stronger/better wearing.

Rossyra's I feel like will leave an obvious line, that I'll forever find irritating. cools solution sounds good but unless the execution is perfect I wouldn't be able to come back from it without damaging the paint. Will definitely try yosai's solution if I male chicken the whole thing up.
Leaving the door open for any final solutions! Next weekend i'll make the call and go for it!

That looks like protective film to me. I had one like this and removed the film - which revealed a nice shiny panel.

Surprised that the art is flaking tbh, but that could just be age/storage condition/use.

(this isn't advice, just letting you know my experience!)

In which case it would be a shame to replace it with adhesive film.

What did you do after you removed the film?

I used it as is. I think that film was meant to be removed tbh.

Never really paid much attention to it but mine seems to have the film and it's lifting very slightly along the bottom edge. It doesn't strike me that it's supposed to be removed. Most panels would've shipped populated so why would it still be on? Even if it was removable 20 years ago it might not be now. Seems like a risk to me.

Looks more like the laminate to me, it has adhesive on it showing signs of stress. It's already pulled some of the paint off... Any shipping film will be very thin flimsy stuff, whereas the laminate will be chunky.

Could try reheating the adhesive and clamping it?

I would do it like cools said before...try reheating/regluing and clamp it down.
As it is just one small part of one corner it will be your best option.

I have a feeling that the glue idea will make things worse. Look at the left side of his panel. That shouldn't look like that. Almost looks like a bubble. An aero panel should have a shiny texture, not dull and matte looking like that.

I think I still have a NOS trackball aero panel with the exact same film. I'll peel it off and film it when I can.
