magnetic field of an HP

Post by erzane »

Hello,
Does magnetic field of an HP can perturb elements around it?
HP specs are 8ohm 3W
I would like to place my HP near the PSU, the 110-220 autrotransformer and all other parts around like in this picture:

Are you talking about the speaker being near the PSU?

Yes, and also near the 110-220 transfomer (the black ''Toyoden'' part)

I would have thought your speaker would be more likely to attract mains / ground humm from all the other coils in that area, rather than the magnet in the speaker affecting those other items directly.

If I get what you say:
1. no need to worry for the other items?
2. it can appears a little noise from the HP? Tha't's the only disturbance I could have?

Well it seems an odd place for your speaker, because surely the sound wont be heard very well if it's facing the floor underneath your cabinet?
Unless it's purely a sub-speaker. :eh:

But for spacing, here's how Taito crammed their speaker, power supplies and CRT very close together in a cocktail arcade table (space invaders in this case).
You'll see it's quite near:

As said above - the only thing that might happen is a bit of background hum in the speaker created by coils in transformers/power supples

I see.
The emplacement of the HP dedicated on my cab (pony18) as basis isn't very good because the magnetic field of the HP causes distortion on the bottom of the screen, that's why they placed a metal plate protection between HP and bottom of the monitor (which is missing in my case), that's the reason why I placed the HP on the floor.

I mountet it on some pcb legs which take the HP higher from the ground and leave the sound going out, but for sure the sound will be a bit muffled, I hope not so much (you can see the difference between the basic original HP from the Pony and the one I replaced by myself on this pic)

Why not get a magnetically shielded speaker? Then you can put it almost where you like?

After all I read It not seems I really need a shield. What's your opinion in this?
If it exist some shield I could buy one, but I really don't know where, and how it looks like..

it's just a speaker that is safe to use near a crt monitor
just search for Magnetically Shielded Speaker on Google

looks like the speaker you have already but the metal part that holds the magnet is thicker

I just found shields there:
https://www.soundlabsgroup.com.au/p/V-1 ... ng+Ring%27
It looks on mine there is already a shield, what do you think about it?
Same shield seems to be arranged on Flinnesters image

That black ring is the magnet.

Shielded speakers look something like this.

I'm not quite sure because my old speakers looks like this and they cause magnetic field with effect on screen when placed close to it.
In opposite, the rings I found on the website looks like mine (on the my smaller speaker)
I'm not saying you're wrong but in any case on Flinnsters pic, the speaker seems to have the same ring as mine, and placed very close to the monitor
