new astro city keeps popping fuse

Post by charlie chong »

got a new astro city here that i hurt by either plugging a board in backwards.( jamma key was funny but dumb mistake)or moisture.cab had been in shed for a while.a bit of a smoky smell and no life in the cab entailed. i let it dry out for a few days changed the fuse in the power supply which was a goner so i hoped it would just switch back on but no joy..
so ordered a jamma power supply and did this hack/workaround mentioned here to keep existing wiring
https://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?t=32406

again turned on cab and fuse just popped instantly..
so where do i go from here to troubleshoot.. i have a multimeter but have always been fairly noobish with regards to cabs..
is it best just to cut my losses and sell on as a project cab if i am not technichally minded??
or anyone in scotchland who can fix it for me :awe:

thanks

should also mention i turned the jamma supply to 110v.i assume this was the right thing to do as the cab is plugged into a stepdown

Hey Charlie, same thing happend with my cab and the fuse. Ended up being a bigger problem and got a tech to take the whole PSU away for work. Hit me on the twitter if you need to talk about it. B

You have a short somewhere. Disconnect everything from the PSU and leave only the 100VAC input. Turn it on and see if it pops the fuse. If it does, the bit that you're connecting the new PSU to is likely at fault.

ok findings so far

with cn03 plug (+12 +5 -5)detached from power supply and 2 remaing plugs left fuse pops..

when i disconnect the smaller plug with this pinout (below the ac plug)
otl nc otn
otl nc otn
otl nc otn
the fuse doesn't pop and the light comes on the new astro city power supply and my jamma supply..
anyways i wont touch anything else until further instructions
so i guess this means the power supplys are ok and something else is shorting it out ??

OTL is AC OUT live, OTN is AC OUT neutral. That's 100VAC going to the monitor and marquee light I think. I don't have this PSU, but that's my guess. Either one is shorting.

i guess now i need to plug in the cno3 and the ac at the same time with the same one disconnected so i know it's definitely that plug popping the fuse..

Hopefully it's the marquee light shorting. Disconnect that and reconnect the AC output.

That's right. It's the left most connector under the CP.

You can disconnect the marquee power supply from the main door below the control panel. Its pinned to the left of the cabinet with those straps, a blue+pink wire (100v) that go up inside the cabinet. There is a 2 pin plug you can disconnect

next guess is pull the plug from monitor chassis which i guess will stop the fuse popping..

oh and thanks nem for teaching me how to roughly isolate where a problem is coming from :awe:

No worries. Shame it wasn't your marquee light.

Next job is to remove the chassis and inspect it for any visible damage.

Grant's your man, however, you still need to remove it to send it to him. Might as well have a quick look yourself.

You need to pull out the monitor, then discharge the tube, remove anode cap, ground wire from neck board, neck board from tube, degauss wire and yoke wires from chassis and then chassis from frame.
