Lubricant for Moving Parts

Post by sparkychan »

Cleaning up a steering assembly from a Sega Outrun cabinet that is full of dust. It appears some of the lubricant used for the gears has spread on the other components making a mess.

I want to give it a complete overhaul removing all the lubricant from the gears. My question now is which lubricant should I apply on the gears once they are cleaned? From my understanding the gears are made of plastic nylon.

Thanks!

WD40 is solvent and petroleum based, not a good idea on nylon/plastic supposedly.

But you could always give it a go, if your gears get eaten away or perish you'll have some idea why :awe:

Rossyra,

Thanks for the suggestion. :) While searching for ceramic grease I found Tamiya Anti Wear Grease. Do you know anything about this product?

It's meant for parts that get heavy use. It applies on thick with less chance of slinging off.

I have heard of the anti-wear one but never used it.

In my experience you want the thinnest grease possible using as small an amount as possible, that way slinging-off shouldn't be a problem anyway.

My tip for applying it is use a fine artists' brush to paint it on very thinly

Not anymore it isn't. There is no petroleum in it anymore (so no homemade blow torches).

WD40 isn't a lubricant though, it's a protectant. Treat it as a metal "conditioner" so things don't dry out. So it's fine to use, but you'll want to grease it up afterwards with a chain lubricant or whatever. The first thing I did when I got my cab was wipe down all the metal parts with WD40 rags to soften things up.

For nylon/plastic, it will clean the old goo off real good, just wipe it down after, it only absorbs into metal anyway.

I use WD40 for damn near everything, it's better than goo gone or any adhesive remover too, nothing in it is toxic either. As a cleaner, it's awesome, to each their own.
