Battle Garegga PCB Sound Error - Fixed -

Post by bloodhokuto »

I just received a Garegga PCB.

Unfortunately when the game powers up I get a 'Sound Error' message before the ROM check.

When the game boots up, sometimes there is no sound. At other times I do get sound.

The board arrived with the demo sound off and it largely doesnt boot at all when I set it to demo sound on. I have also had the game fail to boot at all even when this is off.

I tested the pcb in my cute and with my Sigma supergun and get the same issue.

Sometimes it boots and runs fine, but more often I get the mesaage.

Presumably there is an issue with one or all of the sound components, I did read something somewhere that suggested that one of the sound components could be flakey.

I have tried adjusting 5V as my cab was a little low, in addition the Jamma edge contacts are a little worn down, i have some deoxit gold, and may try some of that, but i am guessing that the board will need to be looked at by someone, unless anyone has any other ideas?

Try this - turn on the cab/supergun - when you get the error/garbage turn it off, then turn it back on really quickly.

Does it boot when you do the above?

Just tried this, and the game booted.

I got BGM during the game, but not all sound effects. Also the music sounded a bit weird.

Someone mentioned to turn down the +5 a bit so will try that too in a bit.

I amended my supergun to 5.79 and I still get the issue, boots with sound error message. If I reset I do seem to get sound.

One thing, it definately does not like the demo sound being on, it just refuses to boot.

Found something similar on a search c/o system11 ;

Just thought I'd mention I have a Garegga PCB which is misbehaving too - boots up to the same static mess described here on my NNC, if I turn it off for a split second and back on again - works fine, every time. If it's a second or more the problem returns.

Strongly suggests either capacitors on the PCB or in the power supply resulting in 5v either taking too long to come up to spec or indeed appearing too fast, I suspect it's upsetting the reset circuit in some way but can't prove it.

Works perfectly up on the test bench with a POS Wei-Ya power supply in it. Works perfectly on both JAMMAs in the study with those no-name Happ supplies in them from the 90s too. I've got a Visco board which behaves the same way - doesn't like the NNC on initial powerup.

Be careful with not having the 5v being too high, I had a similar issue with a supergun donkeys years ago, the sound is powered by the 12v line have you checked that?

5.79 is dangerously high if that’s under load.

Try it lower, 5.25 or so should be fine but superguns are not always playing ball depends on the psu.
I stopped trading/selling pcbs to supergun users at one time so many problems.
Just noticed you have tested in a cab also

Definitely sounds like a reset circuit issue.

Had the same thing happen with an air gallet pcb years ago.

It won't hurt to try the reset circuit fix - it's genuinely broken from the factory and it might help your problem. I did both of mine as soon as I realised wtf was going on.

Well good news everyone!

Thanks to system11's blog post and VectorGlow's handiwork the game now boots without an issue.

Battle Garage is now pumping out bangin' tunes and crunchy sound effects again without having to fanny about with the power switch.

VectorGlow kindly turned this around very quickly, top bloke!

It does make you wonder how many Garegga PCBs were thrown on repair piles and ultimately no longer exist due to this factory/design error.
