Coin mech power question

So I'm needing to get a new coin mech for one of my machines and after reviewing the wire diagram it shows that it uses a 24V line. Would it be stupid if I used a coin mech that requires 12V instead since the mechs I need only seem to have that requirement or do I need to keep searching?
