Sega Naomi & UVC
Hi
Im interested in a Sega naomi set up but I'm a little confused how to connect it all.
I'd like it to go in s sega aero city and ideally convert 31khz to 24khz via a UVC , how would I get the controls to work ? Also is it easy to net boot ?
Thanks

Re: Sega Naomi & UVC
You'd be best to put it in 15khz mode on the Naomi, which is just a case of flicking a dip switch.
Power it with an atx, or sun PSU from a Naomi cabinet, then use a sega, or capcom I/O for the controls.
Netboot with a net dimm, and rasp pi

I've heard that if you do it via the dip it outputs in 480i which my MS8 hates so was really looking to get 240p or 360p from the naomi.

Hey @trev1976
Did you ever come up with a solution for Naomi and the MS8 480i issue? Was it an issue?
Thanks

Re: Sega Naomi & UVC
Short/quick answer to the OP, its easy, just connect the UVC converter in between the Naomi motherboard and the Sega/Capcom IO;
So...you will need to build a 0.156” molex to VGA cable, then connect the UVC to the IO VGA input, blame the UVC manufacturer for providing only one output connector.
PS: You also will have to find a way to feed the UVC with +12V and +5V from the Aero city Power supply, I didn't want to hack the orginal harness so I just installed a 2nd p.supply besides the Sega/SUN PSU feeding the Naomi system.

Re: Sega Naomi & UVC
Just out of interest would this be a suitable UVC for the job? Does anyone have any experience with them? Is it 480P output?

Re: Sega Naomi & UVC
Here's a vid (not mine)
It looks a bit a unsharp, but that's to be expected. The overlay letters look nice & crisp, video levels seem a bit low on the scaled image (a lot darker than the menu text..)

Re: Sega Naomi & UVC
Actually looks alright for the price. I am still not sure if outputs at 480i or 480p though.
Thanks for the video.

Re: Sega Naomi & UVC
The whole point of the UVC is its 31khz to 24khz conversion feature, and you will not get 480p in 24khz, nor 480 interlaced (which is 15khz), the OP is looking to get 24khz from the UVC whose output resolution is 386p or something like that, then select 24khz input on the MS8-26's chassis.

Re: Sega Naomi & UVC
Possibly both. The PDF says 480i@60Hz on the rgbs out.. connector P7
There's some 480P on the other connectors, but those are not rgbs.
