Sega Rev. B JVS - power input questions

Post by gique »

Hi, I am doing a little software R&D on controller I/O.

I am wondering if I can power a JVS without resorting to an arcade power supply so I can make a compact, low power desktop setup for my experiments without using my arcade cabinet.

I`m not using jamma boards at all - the set up would be like this.

PC -> JVSPAC-> JVS -> JAMMA-> REWIRED CONSOLE JOYSTICK

The only thing needing external power in this setup, after the PC of course, would be the JVS, so I am assuming I could wire up a mains adaptor to the JVS via the jamma harness or CN7 or CN6, but am unsure of how I can supply power to the device safely and compactly.

Would a mains adaptor of some sort be ok? or even USB 5V?

I am NOT using any PCB's in this setup, just the JVS in isolation.

Thanks!

Typically you'd supply power to the JAMMA, and the JVS pulls from there.

Really depends what JAMMA2JVS board you are using.

I'm using this one, it has the additional +5 +5 +12 +12 G G connector at the top left.

I'd just use a regular old JAMMA PSU for the +5v and +12v in that case.

Does the JVS require both 5 and 12v just to power that unit alone? As I mentioned, I am trying to find a more compact and hopefully cheaper solution.

looking at this table, it seems it draws a tiny amount of power.

Sorry - I've finally wrapped my head around what you're trying to do (control a Console from a PC via JVS?)

Why not just extend some wires from the PC power supply? That'll have 5v and 12v and oodles of both.

No, I just want to test JVS controller input and output from my PC. Extending wires from my PC isn't portable or compact.

this is all I am trying to do, while keeping the whole thing compact

Ahh, you're pixelcorps from shmups. Hi!

Not sure you're going to get much of a solid answer from anyone, seems like a unique case. If it were me I'd make an extension cable from the PC as a cheap trial to establish power requirements, then go from there deciding whether a second PSU is needed or not.

As an alternative you could mask off the 12V on the JAMMA side of the IO and try it with your cab as a test. You'll need some way of measuring the current drawn on the 5V as well - wouldn't want to just hack up a USB cable only to find it's pulling decent amps and you've blown your PC USB ports.

Hi! Busted already?? hahaha

Ok, so if I use a seperate arcade power supply, is the Meanwell Q120D OK?

Input
100∨~120∨ / 200∨~240∨

Out
+5∨-----8A-----variable
+12∨---2A
+24∨---2A
-12∨---1A

its my cheapest option without resorting to suspect chinese junk..

What's the end purpose for this?

"JVSPAC-> JVS -> JAMMA-> REWIRED CONSOLE JOYSTICK" seems super redundant.

I'm pretty sure you can power a Sega JVS-JAMMA IO with just 5V, so you could just pick up whatever small 5V PSU you can find. The power draw is negligible. I use a 5 euro 3A PSU for a Sega Type 1 JVS IO.

Took me a while too. JAMMA + REWIRED CONSOLE JOYSTICK = Cab controls without the cab.

But why is there a jamma connection at all?

I'm assuming the console stick is already customised to JAMMA, and the JVS JAMMA is already bought - otherwise yeah you'd just wire it to a JVS IO

I think I have mentioned a few times previously it`s for research and development regarding JAMMA / JVS IO

Thanks for the info on the 5v power supply. glad to hear someone else has done it.

I tried a USB cable from a soon to be junked laptop, and got a power surge warning, however this same laptop can`t handle external USB drives either.

So I tried it on my desktop and got the power on "click" from the JVS and no power surge warning. I`ll try the 5v adapter next.

You don't need to power it via jamma :)

For bench use, I have this one:
https://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/JVS#Sega_838-13683-02
https://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/images/c/c ... 02-pcb.jpg

and have simply soldered a couple of loops where 'CN9" was supposed to go, https://www.digikey.no/product-detail/e ... -ND/278888.
That way I can hook up to my lap PSU with clips, or even use a USB charger as supply as it draws close to no power.

when you say USB charger you mean something like this?

this is 1A, is that enough?
