Naomi 1 - general system wide issues

Post by Nevada »

Hey all,
Was given a very sick Naomi last week to have a fiddle with, system would power on but boot animation is very slow, in addition to this every 40ms or so the screen flashes white and there are randomly placed squares on the screen that stay in the same location on each boot but aren't the standard checkerboarding.

With jumper 1 set to 1-2 ram test shows bad for Ic35, Ic16 and Ic18, with it set to 2-3 ram test shows bad for just Ic16 and Ic18

Previously it was also getting bad for Ic29 but after removing the supercap and the eeprom socket and patching a broken trace under the socket that was effecting pin 8, the ic29 issue is gone.

Since the modules were cheap ive ordered in replacements for ic16 and 18.

My biggest concern is with the operating speed however, im inclined to assume it's gpu or cpu related, perhaps an issue with the bga matrix.

While I very much doubt that this is the case has anyone ever experienced this sort of slowdown as a result of bad ram? (that was resolved after replacing/repairing)?
