Hope everything is socketed, and burn a load of roms. Almost everything is different between the JP / Alpha Renewal version.

The jp version has better sounds chips, I'm sure you already know this.
So would a 'simple' rom swap still work with all music and sound fx?

Re: Undercover Cops Region swap
Never saw any 'better sound chips' on JP Irem boards. Any source for this?
I know there's a lot more stuff in the JP & Alpha versions. They basically release an incomplete version to the US/World.
I converted several by burning a full new set. Everything works fine. Just a lot of roms to burn, and a few of them are expensive ones.
A rom swap is all that is needed. They use the same decryption IC for world/jp/usa versions including Alpha renewal.
Converting would devaluate the board a little, since the mask roms are then all non-original. But this way you don't pay the 300+ for the Alpha version.

I don't have any more info regarding pcb differences.
But listen to these differences:

There are no different sound chips.
Which one of the soundtracks is 'better' becomes subjective matter that goes beyond this topic.

Re: Undercover Cops Region swap
As Asure said, there is no differences between World and Japan/Alpha Renewal versions, hardware is identical. For the conversion, take the MAME ROM set and burn it, you need a lot oF EPROM devices (27C512, 27C020, 27C040 27C080) and keep in mind that labelling of sprite ROMS is wrong in MAME!

Re: Undercover Cops Region swap
Thank you but I neither have an Eprom burner, nor the knowledge to do it. So I would like to order them from somebody who can burn them and tell me which ones I need to replace. If anybody can do it please contact me for further details and price. Thanks a lot!

I did get your PM, but no time yet to respons. Probably Caius could better sort you out, as i am all out of 27c080 (the expensive ones..), and have only a little free time.

I too would like to know a bit more.
What is the Alpha Renewal version? How does it compare to the JP version?
Which sprite roms are mis-labeled in MAME?

Alpha Renewal Version is the same as the JP version, albeit with the name changing that the World version went through (Zen became Claude, Matt became Bubba, Rosa - Flame, Parcs - Cue Ball, etc). The World version is the crippled mess we all love to hate, as you may already know.AteThePrincess wrote:I too would like to know a bit more.

Can anyone confirm which ROMs are mislabeled in MAME?

Re: Undercover Cops Region swap
The ones containing sprites data, they have been mislabeled in MAME, you have to invert the order in the sockets.Anyway, even if you put the ROMs in wrong socket, you won't harm anything! So you can also do a "trial and error".CFO wrote:Can anyone confirm which ROMs are mislabeled in MAME?

Re: Undercover Cops Region swap
Thanks, took a few configurations but finally got it! To save anyone some time in the future ICs 34-37 needs to specifically be inverted then good to go
