Coverting Naomi Crazy Taxi to Chihiro Outrun 2?

Post by jonny5 »

Hey guys,

Stupid question time. As per the title, would this work? I am thinking, aside from needing force feedback and the chihiro hard/software, would the I/O's and stuff be the same? They use the same shifter and pedals, right? The Outrun cab I've played on had the same up/down shifter, just labeled up/down, instead of drive reverse on the crazy taxi cab. I think the breaks on the cab I played were messed up since they wouldn't go to the floor like on my crazy taxi.

Could I get a force feedback setup to directly pop in the crazy taxi cab?

If this is possible, I would probably be down to do it, providing it didn't involve serious hacking of shiz.

If possible, please provide a list of what I would need to get to make this conversion work; I'm hoping I can get stuff from Andy perhaps?

Thoughts and advise welcome :)

I did exactly this earlier in the year, it's easier than you might imagine. I wrote a little guide in case anyone else wanted the info :)

Chihiro mobo, GD-Rom drive, OR2 disk and chip, power & link cables.
Image

Disconnect Naomi mobo and remove.
Image

Install Chihiro board. All the connections are exactly the same so nothing to worry about.
Image

Connect up GD-Rom drive and power splitter at the front of the chihiro board.
Image

This is enough to get the game running.
You will be missing Manual gear shift though, and pressing down gear changes the view so some alterations to the wiring are needed.

Image

Crazy Taxi uses pins 23 for Drive and 25 for Reverse. Outrun 2 uses pins 24 for Gear Up and 26 for Gear Down.

Trace them to the connector.
Image

So all the cables are there and go to the connectors on the control panel. Looks like it could be as simple as swapping the connector from the right socket to the left....surely not that simple...
Image
Image

Give it a try...
Image

Well that gets the gears working. Although they are reversed (up is down, down is up) so the cables need to be switched around.

Image

So now we have functioning gears, but lose the start button and view change.
I don't have any proper connectors at the mo so will have to use a few molex pins for now.

Hooked up the original gear down and start to both go to the start button, this will mean I can change view by hitting start during the game.

And that's it, all running properly. No hacking the wiring, to switch back to crazy taxi I just remove the new cable and change the connector over.

Wow!! Thanks so much for that muddymusic!

I couldn't have asked for a better guide, especially considering its the same cab even.

So you didn't bother with the force feedback? How does it handle without it? Do you know if it is possible to get a force feedback from another driving cab and just pop it in?

Sorry for the stupid questions; I'm not at all familiar with JVS stuff and compatibility.

Hmmmm.... I think I will be doing this this winter as a project. Probably have to get Brendz to help.

I honestly wouldn't even be to worried about the shifter; I play on automatic

Might hit you up for some minor details when the time comes just to make sure we do it right.

Thanks again!

Unfortunately you can't get force feedback in a Crazy Taxi cab with any game as the control panel isn't made for it. The assembly only contains return springs.

The Crazy Taxi cabs do have a nice sub woofer though :awe:

If you're just going to play in automatic you can leave all the wiring loom bit out - view change will be on reverse and start will function as normal. I found it fine playing on the spring steering, mine was pretty tight - you could always change over for some tighter springs if you wanted too - although nothing beats the proper feedback on a real cab :awe:

Protip: game is easier with no feedback and motor boards are stupidly expensive :awe:

I had actually posted saying I finally did this, then realized it was supposed to be a surprise for a meet I had over the weekend and some of those guys read this forum, so I edited my post and had thechop do the same. ;)

Thanks again for the excellent walkthrough; made everything nice and easy!

Can anyone confirm if the jump button for Crazy Taxi High Roller is the same pin as the View button for OutRun 2?

I just got my Chihiro hooked up in my Crazy Taxi; haven't done the wiring mod yet. I'm getting an error that the JVS I/O is not correct. What could be wrong? Can anyone post their JVS I/O model so I can compare?

Hello, sorry for the necro, I would like to know how easy is to swap a chihiro board for a naomi one in an outrun 2 sitdown cab (to play mainly initial d)

It's just about as simple as it gets.

Unplug Chihiro and remove game disc.
Plug in Naomi and install game disc/chip.
Job done.

initialD plays better with the bespoke iD wheel setup but using the Model 3 style dash fitted to OutRun2 cab is fine. Oh and you'll need to add a card reader if you want to save data/progress.
