difference between 4 and 8 way controller?
okay...I was looking at pictures of "8-way" joysticks and they seem to have just 4 miroswitches on them. So....what makes a joystick "8-way" ? And also, is using an 8-way joystick on a 4 way game gonna do anything weird? What's the difference between 4-way and 8-way sticks?

its the little collar that can be changed or rotated on the joystick so that it will hit say bottom and left at the same time which is useful for games like street fighter.
hope that helps

It can move in diagonals as well as up/down/left/right.Drakon wrote:So....what makes a joystick "8-way" ?
Yes. If you hit a diagonal, you'll probably find the character in the game doesn't move as you would wish - a killer if you are playng Bomberman or Pac-Man.Drakon wrote:And also, is using an 8-way joystick on a 4 way game gonna do anything weird?

What Sanwa sticks - mine have a restrictor plate on the bottom that makes them 4-way, by stopping the diagonal movement.

dude you sat there the other day when i had to change the gates after playing mr driller g....i had it on 4 way and switched back to 8 way for futari....
and 4 way is not just for older games.....there are lots of newer puzzle games that use 4 way....i prefer 4 way for anything that doesnt use diagonals.....
mr driller is like night and day comparing 4 way to 8 way.....much better control with 4 way
next time you are over i will show you the gates

I understand the gates. I was just trying to figure out why a game would be like that.

4 way:
Tetris
Magical Drop
Pac-man
2 way:
Space Invaders
Galaga
There are more modern ones too it's just too early for me to be thinking.
